Extracts from the assessment and notes include “Tanto in Shira saya resting mounts. Blade is U-No-Kubi Zukuri (Looks Like Cormorant’s Neck Shape From Back).Put in Shira saya after polisjhing. In good old polish showing good forging with small itame grain & a broad band of Nioi crystals following shape of a gunome midare hamon temperline. Signed with 2 kanji name can be read 2 ways Kin Chika / Kane Chika. I read it kane Chika. There is one Smith in my books using this signature working in Yamato full name is Kikuichi Monju Omi Kami Kane Chika Circa 1681-1684. This could be him, needs more research to pinpoint him. A dramatic looking Tanto”. In his illustrations of the blade he adds “cutting edge is 26cms, total length is just under 36.5 sms and identifies the habaki as “good quality 2 piece copper”. Early WW2 Japanese Army Officer’s Type 98 Shin Gunto Sword With Patial Smith Signature ‘HIZEN KUNI’ (Possible Gendaito) , Scabbard & Expert Assessment. Sn 19377:4 - 19377:4
This sword has been assessed by a UK based Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His assessment accompanies this piece. In exerts from the assessment he states “A Type 98 Shin Gunto with possible Gendaito blade. Partial Mei 2nd part rusted away due to jungle campaign ? Tsuka Hilt shows heavy use, water damage rotted most of fish skin under binding, which is intact but very dirty. Still got sarute loop and menuki. With a bit of detective work I have come up with 2 possible men who both started their Mei with the address HIZEN KUNI. This is a very uncommon prefix to a showa period name. John Slough has 2 men listed (Takaguchi family name) Masatsugu a RJT Swordsmith Star Stamp * made medium to high grade blades page 106-107 good comparison or Kino Shita (family name) Yosh Tada. He was also a RJT smith Rikugun Jumei Tosho army approved rated Medium to high grade swords. Very good match both men same Kanji style same horizontal kiri file marks & tang shape. Heavily buffed by previous owner needs professional polish to restore blade. The steel saya scabbard has also been heavily water damaged. It has been covered with a quality leather foul weather cover in 3 pieces fitted around carring ring and ashi mounts, professionally done by a qualified saddler ? attractive looking job. This could be restored polished to bring out beauty of blade. The 2 possible smiths are my conjecture. Made C1940”. In illustrations of the blade which are included in the assessment he translates the tang markings. He states overall length 33”. Cutting edge 24 ½”. He describes Hamon as’ Ko (small) Suguha with irregularities difficult to see’. He observes Yakote line buffed away. Tang end as Nakago Jiri shape (rounded). The price for this sword with expert assessment includes UK delivery. Sn 19377:4

This is not Gendaito but a low to medium grade showa-to oil hardened with usually a nioi edged hamon temperline (not really visible). Needs a polish to reveal work. Signed by Ama Hide’s son ‘NOSHU (province)JU (living in) FUKO MOTO (family name) KANE MUNE (art name) SAKU (made this)’. He and Ido Hide Toshi signed most of the blades produced in the factory. They used a lot of re-worked scrap steel to make blades. Hilt (suka) is gunto pattern showing heavy use with lots of dirt engrained in brown ito wrap. Missing its sarute loop. It still has its locking catch. Tsuba hand guard is gunto pattern but best quality pierced through heavy casting well finished by hand work with its 8 numbered matching seppa (hard to get now), full matching numbered Tsuba and seppa (number translated to 976). Original Victorian Era Indian Pata Gauntlet Long Sword. Sn - 20200
Pata swordsmen of the 17th century through to the Victorian era were specially trained in the use of this weapon, and could be extremely accurate with this somewhat unusual sword form. Peculiar to the Indian subcontinent, these broadswords had a protective gauntlet or armguard of steel, the grip being set at right angles to the blade (see page 485 item 6 of Stone’s A Glossary Of Arms & Armor where a Pata with similar gauntlet form as ours is illustrated). The steel gauntlet on this example has nice age darkened patina. The sword has a 34 ½” flat steel double edged blade and measures 47” overall. The blade is riveted to the ornate extended tang of the Gauntlet. The blade is undamaged with even aged patina. The inside of the gauntlet has a steel bar grip set across the inside of the first part of the gauntlet. The 'cuff' of the gauntlet has a curved fore arm bar/ bracelet which hooks into 2 holes, one either side of the gauntlet. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 20200.

**RARE**MATCHING REGIMENT MARKS**Victorian British Army In India North West Frontier Era Wilkinson London Mountain Artillery Pattern 1896 Sword With Scabbard Both Marked ‘7 MN’ To The 7th Battery Mountain Division Royal Artillery Regiment. Sn 21591 - 21591
The Mountain Division, Royal Artillery, was an administrative grouping of mountain artillery units of the Royal Artillery from 1889. It continued as a distinct branch of the Royal Garrison Artillery until World War I. 7th Battery was based at the Kasi Pashtun tribe ruled area of Quetta near to the NW Frontier border with Afghanistan. In 1876, Quetta was occupied by the British and subsequently incorporated into British India. In 1856, British General John Jacob had urged his government to occupy Quetta given its strategic position on the western frontier. British troops constructed the infrastructure for their establishment. In 1896 a special Pattern of sword was introduced for Mountain Artillery Batteries. This pattern of sword is one of the rarest of regulation patterns and was used by British & Indian troops during campaigns on the North West frontier (see pages 228-230 of Robson's book Swords Of The British Army). This is an excellent original example. The Sword has a 30 ¼” long single edged sabre blade with fullers (35” overall). The blade is clean with no rust or damage. The ricasso is marked With ‘ISD with WD arrow’ mark denoting British production for use by the British Army in India. The blade is signed by the manufacturer ‘Wilkinson London’ & with ‘I with WD arrow mark’ denoting acceptance by the India Stores Depot for use in the Indian Services. Our example has a brass flat bow guard and correct grooved cast iron ribbed grip. The guard is Regiment marked ‘7 MN’ To The 7th Battery Mountain Division Royal Artillery Regiment above weapon number ‘84’. The sword is complete with its original correct leather scabbard with brass mounts. The throat mount with locket has matching Regiment mark and weapon number together with other letters and numbers (illustrated). All stitching & leather of the scabbard are intact. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 21591
