WW2 Japanese Army Gunzoku (Military Civilian Employee) Officer’s Gendaito Hand Forged Katana Long Sword Smith Signed Tang ‘Kane Tsune’ Scabbard With Campaign Leather Cover & Expert Assessment. ED 2414 - ED 2414 An original late WW2 Japanese Officer's Sword and Scabbard. The sword has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his hand written notes and illustrations accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “Civilian sword for military use by Gunzoku (civilians employed by the army). They wore uniform and were entitled to carry swords. 65cm Gendaito hand forged blade (says forged in Mei in inscription). Signed by its maker ‘Kane Tsune’, born in 1910 real name Nishimura Kazufumi. He worked as a gunto smith in Giffu. This is the only mention I can find of him cannot find any other Oshigata of him. The blade is in good old polish with only one chip in edge. A very unusual hamon which does not conform to standard types. Appears a bit wild and uncontrolled in places. Hada is also a bit wild with large patches of vivid O Itame. It does not appear to have had yakote line in point. Possible war time polish. Saya is wood withthin layer of lacquer covered in campaign leather cover worn in places. Tsuba soft metal showa period made . Lost its original seppa, leather put in place. Tsuka hilt very good quality han dachi mounts looks Meiji & good menuki. Very dirty brown binding intact. Missing a sarute loop for rank tassel. An interesting example of a civilian sword carried to war (see Markus Sesko books on Japanese Smiths page 294 re smith. Only man using these kanji in Showa period (war time) born 1910 worked as a gunto smith)”. In his illustrations Bill translates the signature on the tang. He describes the tang end as Kuri Jiri (rounded) cutting edge 65cms total length 85cms. He describes the hamon as based on suguha medium Nioi crystals of Martensite, grain mixed masame goes into O (large) Itame in patches. WW2 Era Japanese Kokura Arsenal Type 32 Army & Mounted Infantry Trooper’s Sword & Scabbard. Sn 22241 - 22241 This is an excellent WW2 Japanese Type 32 Army & Mounted Infantry Trooper’s Sword & Scabbard (see Chapter 11 page 119 of Swords Of Imperial Japan By Dawson). The sword has a regulation steel and wood chequered hilt. It has its regulation steel guard with cord slot & its spring loaded scabbard release catch works perfectly. It has a clean, 32 ¾” fullered curved steel blade with serial number 84485 at the ricasso together with arsenal inspection mark. The blade has just small areas of staining consistent with age and has no damage to the cutting edge. The guard has indistinct marks including a Kokura arsenal combined cannon balls mark. **ANCIENT 16th CENTURY BLADE**Japanese Soshuden School Ko (Small) Wakizashi Sword Blade In Wood Shira Saya Resting Mounts Sayagaki Signature ‘Soshu Masa Mune’ With Carry Bag / Cover & Expert Assessment. Sn 22238 - 22238 This ancient blade has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of Bill’s hand written notes and illustrations accompany the blade. In extracts from his notes Bill states “Ko (small) Wakizashi unsigned cut down from a larger blade. Blade shoulders (machi) moved down and tang reshaped. Looks like done along time ago with ancient rust on tang. Hard to define with alteration to tang shape but blade work looks Soshuden (School)work. There is a Sayagaki on the saya in ink experts written opinion saying Soshu Masa Mune, one man using this name nearly 800 years ago, most famous smith in history. Definitely not him but a lot of other smiths used this art name working in the 16th century more likely to be just an ordinary maker using famous name. Had work done in Japan in 20th century. Polish, polish and Shira Saya when this inscription put on by an unknown man, just his personal seal on end of saya. Interesting old blade with some flaws and tired spots”. In his illustrations of the blade he describes the cutting edge of blade as just under 34 cms. Total length just under 45 cms. **LARGE**18th Century Imperial German Boar Hunting Dagger / Sidearm With Hunting Scenes Brass Clamshell Hilt, Full Knuckle Guard, Twisted Horn Grip Blade Etched & Blued Numbers & Letters Panels Both Sides & Scabbard. Sn 22224 - 22224 This is an excellent Imperial German Hunting Dagger / Sidearm. These substantial weapons were carried when hunting large game such as Boar for self defence and to deliver the 'death blow' to the hunted prey. It has an undamaged brass clamshell hilt with twisted horn grip. It has a full brass Knuckle guard with ornate cast decoration including the depiction of a hunter, fixed clamshell on one side cast with mounted hunter and stylised gothic head form finials on the cross guard and handguard. The centre of the cross guard has the stylised depiction of a wild Boar. The pommel has ornate cat decoration. Its 21 ½” double edged blade has staining and age related patina. The blade has 2 small rectangular panels either side near to the hilt both with indistinct blue etched numbers and letters which can be seen in the images. The blade is 1 ¼” broad at its widest. The sidearm measures 27” overall. The weapon is complete with original brown leather scabbard. The leather has light foliate tooled decoration, riveted belt loop and retaining strap with press stud fastener. All leather & stitching of the scabbard are intact. Early WW2 C1939-1940 Japanese Officer's Type 98 Shin Gunto Seki Arsenal Katana Sword With Smith Signed Tang ‘SEKI JU KAWASAKI NAGA MITSU SAKU’ Scabbard With Leather Field Service Cover & Expert Assessment. Sn 22124 - 22124 An original early Ww2 Japanese Officer's Type 98 Sword with smith signed tang. The sword has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his hand written notes and illustrations accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “A Type 98 shin gunto army officer’s sword with Honoki wood saya, leather covered for field service, in good used condition, one ashi suspension ring. Tsuba standard gunto pattern brass. With couple of seppa. Tsuka hilt with gunto brass fittings and copper menuki. Missing its sarute cord loop. Fish skin complete & bound in light brown Ito, clean condition. The blade is a reasonable quality Showa To None traditional made using scrap iron or bar stock, hand worked and oil quenched to produce a nioi crystal edged temper line hamon. Signed by its maker ‘SEKI (City) JU (Living In) KAWASAKI (Family Name) NAGA MITSU (Art Name) SAKU (Made This)’. Born in 1906 worked as a gunto army smith (see Fuller & Gregory books page No.61 List 293. And Markus Sesko book on Japanese sword smiths page 249 for this man. Blade is in original polish (bright) with scuff marks & scratches after 80 yrs of carry & use. A nice example of an Officer’s sword made circa 1938-39”. In his illustrations Bill translates the tang signature, identifies a partial seki arsenal mark. He measures the cutting edge as just under 65.5 cms, total length 856 cms and describes other blade and tang measurements & characteristics which can be seen in image 2. WW1 Era British Officer’s Bamboo Walking / Swagger Sword Stick With Square Shank Form Blade & Root Ball Handle. Sn 22166 - 22166 A very WW1 Era British Officer’s Bamboo Walking / Swagger Sword Stick. It has a 22” Square shank blade which tapers to a pin sharp point. The blade has areas of age related staining. It measures 28 ¾” overall and has a slim root ball handle. Boer War 1901 Dated 1899 Pattern, British WD Wilkinson Heavy Cavalry Sword Regiment Marked ‘5Y NK’ To The 5th Norfolk Yeomanry Cavalry & Mole Patent WD Scabbard Sn 22198 - 22198 The Norfolk Yeomanry was a volunteer cavalry (Yeomanry) regiment of Britain's Territorial Army accepted onto the establishment of the British Army in 1794. After seeing action in the Second Boer War, it served dismounted at Gallipoli, in Palestine and on the Western Front during the First World War. Between the wars it converted to the Royal Artillery , and served as an anti-tank regiment in France, the Western Desert, Italy and North West Europe during the Second World War. After the war it served as a Territorial Army air defence unit and then as an Army Air Corps unit. This is an excellent original Troopers Sword to the Norfolk Yeomanry Cavalry (see pages 54 & 55 of Swords of The British Army by Robson). The Sword has a 33 ½” single edged, slightly curved blade with fullers (40” overall length). The blade is undamaged and clean with just a few scuffs consistent with scabbard carry. The ricasso is marked on both sides. One side has War Dept arrow and inspection mark. The reverse has ‘Wilkinson London’, 9 01 date (September 1901) and inspection marks. The spine of the blade is stamped '/99' (1899 Pattern) together with inspection mark. The full bowl guard is Regiment marked on the inside ‘5 Y NK’ to the 5th Squadron Norfolk Yeomanry Cavalry together with other indistinct numbers. The Sword's black hard boiled leather chequered grips with 3 rivets are secure and undamaged. It is complete with its original steel scabbard with 2 fixed hanging rings. The scabbard has WD inspection marks and is stamped ‘Mole Patent’. The scabbard has even patina and just a few small dents. The price for this Regiment marked Boer War sword includes UK delivery. SOLD SOLD (27/03) **NAPOLEONIC WARS ERA**QUALITY MAKERS**British 1796 Pattern Officer's Quality Light Cavalry Sword By JJ Runkel Solingen Germany & London With Blued & Gilt Etched Blade & Scabbard By Knubley & Brunn London. Sn 22155 - 22155 Johann Justus Runkel was born in Germany in 1751. Between 1751 and 1779, he lived in the parish of Renysdorff, Neuwid, Prussia. He emigrated to Britain, either in 1779 or in 1780, where he practised his profession as an importer of swords and sword blades from Solingen. He had a shop in London at 8 Tookes Court, Castle Street, Holborn, sometimes also listed as Chancery Lane as which ran adjacent to Tookes Court, where he sold swords both to military officers and to other sword retailers. In the late 18th century, Charing Cross in London was a hub of gunsmithing activity. This included John Prosser, Thomas Gill, and John Knubley. In 1790 Knubley was awarded the title of Gunmaker to the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Clarence and Prince Edward. Knubley moved his business to 7 Charing Cross in 1792. Knubley passed away in February 1795, but his wife continued the business along with Samuel Brunn until 1779 who operated as Knubley, Brunn & Co, Charing Cross, London. Brunn passed the business along to John Mallet who continued to operate at Charing Cross until 1803. This is an excellent British 1796 Pattern Officer's Quality Light Cavalry Sabre By JJ Runkel With Etched Blade & Scabbard By Knubley & Brunn. These Sabres were primarily used by British Light Dragoons and Hussars during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade is remembered today as one of the best of its time and has been described as the finest cutting sword ever manufactured in quantity. Officers of the famous 95th Rifles, Light Infantry Regiments and the "flank" Companies of Line Regiments adopted these Swords. Pattern 1796 Sabres were used at The Battle of Waterloo 1815. Our example has a single edged, fullered 34 ½” Sabre blade (39 ¾” overall). The blade has original leather hilt washer & some light staining consistent with age but no rust. Both sides of the blade are blued for approx. half the length & have gilt etched panels, foliate decoration & King’s Crowns with Royal Cyphers ‘GR’ (George Rex). The spine of the blade has crisp gilt maker’s signature ‘J.J. Runkel Solingen’. Its cross guard with rounded langets, knuckle guard, pommel and leather covered ribbed grip with wire binding are in nice condition. The wire binding is tight and intact. The grip strap has line engraved decoration. The Sabre is complete with its original steel scabbard with original hanging rings. The scabbard has several dents consistent with age and service use. Near to the throat, one side of the scabbard has a roundel engraved ‘Knubley & Brunn Charing Cross London’. **ANCIENT BLADE**Early Shinto Period 17th Century Japanese Gendaito Katana Sword Blade Partial Smith Signature ‘SA GAMI KAMI (MINAMOTO NORI ?) In Protective Honoki Wood Shira Saya Resting Mounts & Expert Assessment. Sn 21503 - 21503 This is an ancient Japanese Katana blade which has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his hand written assessment notes accompany this blade. Extracts from the assessment and notes include “Katana blade in old Shira Saya. This is an antique blade, looks to date to early Shinto period. Has had the blade shoulders (machi) moved down shortening the cutting edge & sides shaved and jiri (end) cut with chisel damaging one kanji and cutting half through another. The bottom kanji of the name is missing completely. The address & title SA GAMI KAMI MINAMOTO is not common, not many smiths used this combination. Possibly this could be SA GAMI KAMI MINAMOTO (NORI ? HIRO ?) working 1684 to 1688 Ishido school. This is educated guess work only. Only one man used this combination of titles and names, mentioned in Markus Sesko book on swordsmiths page 334. A nice study piece worthy of further research in un-touched condition”. **MINT**Late Edo Period Into 20th Century Japanese Samurai Nata Gardener’s Knife With Scabbard, Tasselled Cord & Expert Assessment. Sn 19377:6 19377:6 - 19377:6 This knife has been examined by Japanese sword expert Bill tag, a copy of his assessment accompanies the knife. In his notes he describes the knife as “A very good quality example in practically mint condition. A very simple forged blade made by an artisan blacksmith with basic 2 or 3 folds to the blade, crudely polished with filed decoration in bright condition crude basic tang never signed. Wood saya & tsuka possibly cherry wood capped with stag horn (antler) and tied withsplit bamboo (decorative0. Not a peasant’s tool too expensive. Well off Samurai Lords and merchants did gardening as a hobby and carried these. This mount is pure folk art by artist in wood and bamboo not signed. Most of them sold off to foreign collectors in the late 19th century”. In his illustrations he describes total length as 13 ¾” and cutting edge as just under 8”.
