SOLD SOLD (27/03) **NAPOLEONIC WARS ERA**QUALITY MAKERS**British 1796 Pattern Officer's Quality Light Cavalry Sword By JJ Runkel Solingen Germany & London With Blued & Gilt Etched Blade & Scabbard By Knubley & Brunn London. Sn 22155 - 22155 Johann Justus Runkel was born in Germany in 1751. Between 1751 and 1779, he lived in the parish of Renysdorff, Neuwid, Prussia. He emigrated to Britain, either in 1779 or in 1780, where he practised his profession as an importer of swords and sword blades from Solingen. He had a shop in London at 8 Tookes Court, Castle Street, Holborn, sometimes also listed as Chancery Lane as which ran adjacent to Tookes Court, where he sold swords both to military officers and to other sword retailers. In the late 18th century, Charing Cross in London was a hub of gunsmithing activity. This included John Prosser, Thomas Gill, and John Knubley. In 1790 Knubley was awarded the title of Gunmaker to the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Clarence and Prince Edward. Knubley moved his business to 7 Charing Cross in 1792. Knubley passed away in February 1795, but his wife continued the business along with Samuel Brunn until 1779 who operated as Knubley, Brunn & Co, Charing Cross, London. Brunn passed the business along to John Mallet who continued to operate at Charing Cross until 1803. This is an excellent British 1796 Pattern Officer's Quality Light Cavalry Sabre By JJ Runkel With Etched Blade & Scabbard By Knubley & Brunn. These Sabres were primarily used by British Light Dragoons and Hussars during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade is remembered today as one of the best of its time and has been described as the finest cutting sword ever manufactured in quantity. Officers of the famous 95th Rifles, Light Infantry Regiments and the "flank" Companies of Line Regiments adopted these Swords. Pattern 1796 Sabres were used at The Battle of Waterloo 1815. Our example has a single edged, fullered 34 ½” Sabre blade (39 ¾” overall). The blade has original leather hilt washer & some light staining consistent with age but no rust. Both sides of the blade are blued for approx. half the length & have gilt etched panels, foliate decoration & King’s Crowns with Royal Cyphers ‘GR’ (George Rex). The spine of the blade has crisp gilt maker’s signature ‘J.J. Runkel Solingen’. Its cross guard with rounded langets, knuckle guard, pommel and leather covered ribbed grip with wire binding are in nice condition. The wire binding is tight and intact. The grip strap has line engraved decoration. The Sabre is complete with its original steel scabbard with original hanging rings. The scabbard has several dents consistent with age and service use. Near to the throat, one side of the scabbard has a roundel engraved ‘Knubley & Brunn Charing Cross London’.
