WW2 Japanese Army Officer’s Type 98 Shin Gunto Seki Arsenal Sword With Smith Signature ‘NOSHU SEKI JU HATTORI MASA HIRO SAKU’, Scabbard With Leather War Service Cover & Expert Assessment. Sn 20599 - 20599
This sword has been assessed by a UK based Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His assessment accompanies this piece. In exerts from the assessment he states “A Type 98 Shin Gunto . This is a medium grade showa-To oil tempered blade made Seki arsenal using Yaki Ire process to produce its temperline (Hamon) not visible with rust. It is signed Kazu Uchi Mei, I think this means another man actually signed the Nakago, probably his job to sign for a lot of other arsenal smiths ‘‘NOSHU (province) SEKI (city) JU (living in) HATTORI (family name) MASA HIRO (art name) SAKU (made this)’. He is rated as making either low to medium grade Showa-To (none traditional forged) or medium grade Gendaito (hand forged). This is a good example of his work but needs a polish to see what is in it. Saya is Honoki wood, leather covered for war service, used condition with a period reinforcing brass collar put on mouth of Saya. Tsuba good quality Gunto pattern with lots of gilt on it, also good quality Gunto mounts, some gilt and colour remaining. Ito wrap & fish skin good but skin shrunk revealing small gaps. Needing a sarute (knot loop) to complete it”. In his illustrations of the blade he describes the cutting edge of blade as 66 cms. Total length 86 cms. He also translates the tang signature & describes other blade characteristics and dimensions (illustrated). The price for this sword with expert assessment includes UK delivery. Sn 20599

**EXTREMELY RARE, ONE OF ONLY APPROX 6000**Original, Pre WW2 Japanese NCO's 1st Pattern, Type 95 Katana With Solid Copper Hilt, Suya (Harp) & Tokyo Kokura Arsenal Marks & 2nd Pattern Scabbard. Sn 20649 - 20649
On September 16th 1935 a new sword was authorised for Japanese army NCo’s. 1st type sword hilts were made from solid unpainted copper, later variants had cast alloy painted hilts (see page 183 of Swords Of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 by Dawson). Only approx. 6,000 1st type copper hilt NCO swords were made before introduction of alloy hilt variants. This is an original extremely rare 1st type pre WW2 Japanese NCO's Katana with copper hilt and scabbard. The sword has the correct solid copper unpainted cast handle with lanyard ring hole fitted with steel cord loop, quality heavy brass tsuba and scabbard retaining clip which functions as it should. It has an undamaged, fullered, 27 ½” blade which has just light staining consistent with age. The blade is numbered ‘6321’ on one side above the fuller. The copper hilt is stamped with 1929-45 Kokura Arsenal mark, Suya sword shop (Harp) mark (see page 185 of Dawson’s book) and inspection mark. It is complete with its original 2nd pattern scabbard which has a single hanging ring. The scabbard has no damage or dents. The throat of the scabbard is numbered ‘7199’ which is in relatively close number sequence to the sword indicating that this was one of the last 1st types to be made in the transitional period when the 2nd type NCO’s Katana was being introduced and our example ended up being issued with a 2nd type scabbard, or a mistake in the factory production line resulting in our example being issued with a mis-matching but relatively close numbered scabbard. The price for this nicely marked extremely rare piece includes UK delivery. Sn 20649

**ANCIENT PRE 1600 BLADE**Japanese Soshuden School Yori Doshi (Armour Piercing) Dagger Blade In Wood Shira Saya Resting Mounts, Previous Owners Research Notes & Expert Assessment. Sn 20631 - 20631
This ancient blade has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of a previous owners research notes which contain copies of images of this blade and a copy of Bill’s hand written notes and illustrations accompany the blade. In extracts from his notes Bill states “Ancient Yori Doshi (Armour Piercing Dagger). This is undoubtedly pre 1600 in manufacture and it does look Soshuden school work. Armour piercing daggers are not that common, you don’t see them often. A massive blade, but feels light in the hand. Nakago big taper to a very small jiri (end). Very reminiscent of Mura Masa of ise style. Circa 1490’s-1510’s. The hamon is based on Sugha (straight) on one side, on the other it has irregularities, small gunome. There is a lot of work going on inside hamon. Needs a stone polish to bring it out. The grain is hard to see in places but quite wild in other parts. Probably restored and polished in Meiji period and not touched since. A study piece”. In his illustrations of the blade he describes the cutting edge of blade as 26 cms. Total length 38 cms. He also describes other blade characteristics and dimensions (illustrated). The price includes UK delivery. Sn 20631
