C1870 Victorian British ‘Ede Son & Ravenscroft Chancery Lane (London)’ Royal Household Court Small Sword With Ornate Brass Hilt & Scabbard With Frog. Sn 20739:6 - 20739:6
The small sword (also court sword, French: épée de cour or dress sword) is a light one-handed sword designed for thrusting which evolved out of the longer and heavier rapier of the late Renaissance. The height of the small sword's popularity was between mid 17th and late 18th century. It is thought to have appeared in France and spread quickly across the rest of Europe. The small sword was the immediate predecessor of the French dueling sword (from which the épée developed. This is an excellent original C1870 Victorian British Royal Household Court Small Sword (see page 280 of Wither’s book ‘World Swords’ where a C1870 British Royal Court Sword with the same hilt as ours is illustrated). It has an ornate cast brass hilt with cross guard & clam shell. The clam shell has ornate decoration. It has a bar knuckle guard & Crown type pommel. The slim 31 ½” blade is straight and undamaged and has just staining consistent with age. The blade is etched on both sides with foliate decoration. One side has a panel with the maker or retailers name & address ‘Ede Son & Ravenscroft Chancery Lane (London)’ (Established 1689 and still in business today as Ede & Ravenscroft, the Company provided the Royal Household, Judiciary and Ministers with robes and other accoutrements). The sword measures 38” overall. It is complete with its original leather bound wood scabbard which has brass mounts. The throat mount is fitted with a simple small leather frog with belt loop. It has an ornate brass hilt with part bowl guard, knuckle bow and ball top. The slim 28 ½” flat diamond section blade is straight and undamaged and has just light staining consistent with age. 855 Pattern Imperial Prussian Infantry Pioneer’s Brass Hilt Short Sword Faschinenmesser (Fascine Knife) ED 2364. - ED 2364
This is an original, 1855 Prussian Infantry Pioneers Short Sword (see page 196 of World Swords 1400-1945 By Withers). It has 1 ½” broad, 19” long, heavy single edged blade and measures 24 ¼ ” overall. It has a rugged brass handle deeply grooved for grip with ball pommel and the straight cross guard has the correct rolled ends. The cross guard is crisply marked with two crosses and a ‘7’. The ricasso of the blade is marked with an Imperial Prussian Crown & Monogram inspection mark to one side and the maker ‘P.D.L’ (P. D. Luneschloss, Solingen). The Sword is without scabbard. Edwardian & WW1 Era British 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword With King George V Etched Blade & King Edward VII Sword Guard With Leather Cord, Acorn Portepee, Leather Covered Field Service Scabbard & Frog. ED 2174 - ED 2174
This is an original British1897 pattern Infantry Officer's sword, scabbard and frog. The sword has a 30 ½” long blade with partial fullers and measures 38 ¾” overall. The blade has areas of staining consistent with age and use. The blade has light foliate etched panels and a WW1 era King George V Crown & ‘GR V’ Royal Cypher indicating this sword was made for WW1 use using surplus Edwardian guards. There is no visible maker name but it has the correct engraved ordnance acceptance proof star and inlaid brass roundel and original leather hilt washer. It has a full 1897 Pattern knuckle guard with pre WW1 King Edward VII ‘King’s Crown ER VII’ device. It has a curved stepped pommel with ball top and knurled back strap for grip, fish skin grip with wire binding in very good condition (the fish skin has a couple of small splashes of white paint possibly due to storage near to paint tins at some point in its life). The guard is fitted with Officer’s leather cord and acorn knot. It is complete with leather covered wood field service scabbard. The scabbard has a German silver throat mount & is loosely fitted with leather frog that has 2 belt loops and buckles. The frog is suitable for display only rather than for wearing. **NAMED**WW1 Era British George V 1897 Pattern Sword With Presentation Etched Blade ‘Presented To Captain Goronwy Owen By His Golfing Friends March 1st 1915’ (Lieutenant-Colonel Goronwy Owen DSO & Twice Mentioned In Despatches 15th Royal Welch Fusiliers ) - 20769
Goronwy Owen was born at Penllwyn, Aberystwyth. He was educated at Ardwyn Grammar School and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth where he gained an MA degree. He worked as a schoolteacher in London until 1914 but then joined the London Welsh Battalion (15th Royal Welch Fusiliers) as an officer. He served in France and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1916. He was promoted to Brigade Major and twice mentioned in dispatches. By 1948 however he was being referred to as having achieved the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. After the war, he was called to the Bar by Gray's Inn but the law was a subordinate interest to business and politics. He became a member of the London Stock Exchange and went into the oil business. He became president of British Controlled Oilfields which had interests in Venezuela and the Caribbean and was on the board of the Trinidad Petroleum Development Company as well as having interests in other commercial and trading companies. Owen was elected as Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Caernarvonshire at the 1923 general election. This is an excellent WW1 era 1897 pattern Infantry Officer's sword with presentation etched blade presented to Captain Goronwy Owen by his golfing friends in 1915 (a copy of a period portrait image of Goronwy Owen, the original of which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery London is illustrated in image 1). The sword has a clean 33” long blade with partial fullers. The blade is etched on both sides with decorative foliate panels. One side has Kings crown Royal Cypher ‘GR V’ (George V Rex). The blade also has an etched panel ‘Presented To Captain Goronwy Owen By His Golfing Friends March 1st 1915’ and has the ordnance acceptance star with inlaid brass proof roundel. It has a full 1897 Pattern knuckle guard with King George V Crown & Royal Cypher. It has a curved stepped pommel with ball top and knurled back strap for grip, leather covered wood grip with wire binding in good condition. It is complete with leather covered wood field service scabbard. The throat has a German silver insert and it retains its leather tab hanger strap. All leather and stitching are clean and intact. A original Victorian era Gentleman’s Mallaca Sword Stick. It has a full size 27 ½” long single edged steel sword blade with fullers (34 ¾” overall length unsheathed). The blade has an inlaid British Military brass proof roundel. The blade has staining and aged patina. There are no visible date or maker marks. It measures 35 ¼” overall in its scabbard and has an undamaged curved solid Stag antler handle with large ornate foliate and void shield device silver ferrule. There are no visible hall marks on the ferrule, the edges of which have age and handling related wear. The Mallaca scabbard has a brass ferrule at the tip. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 20739:1

1832 French Pattern 1831 Foreign Legion / Infantry “Coupe Choux” (Cabbage Chopper) Gladius Short Sword / Side Arm & Scabbard. Sn 18717. - 18717
This is an excellent original 1832 dated French Infantry 1831 Pattern Gladius side arm (see page 190 of World Swords by Withers). The Soldiers who carried these weapons referred to them as “coupe choux” which means “cabbage chopper”. These side arms were used by French Infantry including the Famous Foreign Legion during the Mexican expedition. The weapons were In service during Louis-Philippe until the Second Empire with Napoléon III. The swords have a Neo-classical design based upon the Roman Gladius. The hilt is constructed entirely of brass with a grip patterned with 26 raised ribs or rings. This example of the French 1831 pattern sword has the correct double-edged diamond-cross-section blade which is 19 ¼” in length and correct 26 ribbed brass handle. On one side, the ricasso has a rubbed indistinct manufacturer mark and 1832 date. The reverse has a small indistinct inspection mark. The handle has a small inspection mark and is numbered 1438. The Sword is complete with original Leather Scabbard with brass locket and chape. The throat mount is numbered 696. All leather and stitching of the scabbard are intact. Imperial German WW1 Era Kinder (Child’s) Dress Sabre With Lion’s Head Pommel Scabbard. Sn 16199 - 16199
This is an excellent Original Imperial German Era Kinder (Child’s) Dress Sabre With Scabbard. The sword has crossed sabres insignia on a foliate background on the langet and a plain shield reverse langet. It has a fish skin wire bound grip. The wire is tight and intact. It has flat knuckle bow and Lion’s head pommel with mane grip strap. The cross guard finial is ‘Puma’s head’ form. The sabre measures a short 30” overall and a 25” single edged, curved blade with fullers. The blade has light staining consistent with age. The ricasso has a very faint indistinct trademark obscured by one of the langets. The blade is fitted with original leather hilt washer. The sabre is complete with its original black painted steel scabbard with 2 steel hanging rings and shoe. The scabbard has no dents but the original paint has surface wear to be expected.
