This is an excellent 20th century presentation Truncheon. It is just under 15 ½” overall length and made of undamaged Lignum Vitae Tropical Hardwood. The truncheon is mounted with a white metal shield presentation shield. The shield is engraved ‘Presented To B. A. West Esq As A Mark Of Appreciation From The Golfers Of "V" Division Metropolitan Police’. The staff has a deep grooved grip with rounded end fitted with leather wrist strap in excellent condition. This is an excellent WW1 Special Constabulary drill competition prize Truncheon awarded to a Special Constables Police Sergeant serving during WW1. It is just under 15” overall length and made of undamaged Lignum Vitae Tropical Hardwood. The truncheon is mounted with a wrap around sterling silver presentation plate 4cm width x 9.5 cm circumference. The silver is nicely hand engraved ‘METROPOLITAN SPECIAL CONSTABULARY X DIVISION DRILL COMPETITION WON BY S/S E. BEAZLEY JANY 16TH 1916 P.C. E. BEAZLEY’. The plate has sterling silver hallmarks for London 1915-1916 with what looks like R.H & Son maker mark most likely R Hodd & Son (registered Feb 1903) Hatton Garden, London. The staff has a deep grooved grip with rounded end fitted with leather wrist strap in excellent condition. The wood is undamaged with no dents. From 1844 Salford Police officers belonged to Salford Borough Police. In 1926 Salford Borough Police were re-named Salford City Police. On 1/4/1968 it merged into Manchester and Salford Police, which on 1/4/1974 was absorbed into Greater Manchester Police. This is an excellent rare to find original WW1 wooden Police Presentation Truncheon to a Special constable who saw service during WW1 and beyond until 1919. It is 15 ¼” length and made of the traditional heavy Lignum vitae tropical hard wood. It has a highly coloured polychrome oval panel at the widest part of the staff. The panel features the Kings Crown with Royal Cypher ‘GR’(George Rex) together with Salford City Coat of Arms & gold lettering 'Special Constable' above '1914-1919'. It has a deep grooved grip with fitted with leather wrist strap. The wood is undamaged with no dents. The butt of the staff is impressed by the maker ‘Hiatt & Co Ld Birm’. The leather of the truncheon is clean and intact and is impressed with ‘Hiatt’s Patent’ cartouche. The ball shaped butt id fitted with leather wrist strap. The truncheon is 15 ¼” overall length. The Police whistle functions as it should . It is 2 ½” length and engraved ‘Liverpool Police’. The whistle also has maker detail ‘W. Dowler Birm’. Its ring is fitted with steel link chain and leather tab with eyelet for uniform attachment. The belt buckle has cast Liverpool heraldic arms, belt bar and hooks. The buckle measures 3 ½” x 2 ¼”. Victorian Irish Police Bog Oak Wooden Truncheon / Staff With Hand Carved Shamrocks & Harp. Sn 23484:79 - 23484:79
Bog Oak, much like Brown Oak, is not a specific species, but is rather a term that designates oak that has been buried in a peat bog, sometimes for several hundreds of years. The anaerobic conditions of the bog protect the wood from decay, while the acidic water contains tannins, which stain the wood a dark brown to almost black. This is an excellent Victorian Irish Police Hand Carved Bog Oak Wooden Truncheon / Staff. This heavy truncheon measures 12 ½” overall. For its whole length and around its circumference the staff is deeply hand carved with, Leaves, Shamrocks and Harp designs. The grip section which is holed for wrist cord has a hand carved diamond shaped pattern to assist grip. The tip of the staff is decorated with a hand carved shamrock. This is an excellent quality original WW1 Lignum Vitae Hard Wood Special Constable's / Sergeant’s Truncheon of the Birmingham Special Constabulary dated 1916 - 1919. It is 15” in length. Its Polychrome decoration consists of King’s Crown GRV over Birmingham City Coat Of Arms and banners Birmingham Special Constabulary above 1916-1919 dates all highlighted in bold colours. It has a deep grooved grip with rounded end fitted with original leather wrist strap. The strap has faint period hand applied name ‘Davies’ together with other indistinct lettering, most likely the name of the Special Constable who carried this truncheon during WW1 and beyond. WW1 Stockport Traders Company of Special Constables Connections 1914 – 1919 Dated, Stockport County Special Constable’s Polychrome Decorated Lignum Vitae Tropical Hardwood Truncheon To SC William Crossley With His Great War Medal & Framed Sepia Company Group Photo. Sn 23191 In the Autumn of 1856 as a result of the County and Borough Police Act 1856. Cheshire Justices were obliged to establish a paid Police Force for the whole of each County area including Stockport Borough. In 1870 Stockport Borough established its own Constabulary. The Borough later became part of the Cheshire Constabulary and now forms part of the Greater Manchester Policing area. The Stockport Traders Company of Special Constables was a historical volunteer police unit formed during the First World War (1914–1918). Composed of local tradesmen and businessmen, this unit assisted the regular Stockport Borough Police during the Great War. Members were issued bronze Special Constabulary medals, often with a "Great War 1914-18" clasp, and traditionally decorated truncheons featuring the Stockport coat of arms and the officer's name. This is an original WW1 Lignum Vitae Tropical Hardwood Stockport Special Constable’s Truncheon to Stockport SC William Crossley, his Great War medal and an original period framed Group photograph of the Stockport Traders Company of Special Constables in Uniform. The truncheon is 15 ½” length and has highly coloured polychrome decoration featuring The Kings Crown with Royal Cypher ‘GR’ (George Rex) together with Stockport Coat of Arms. Beneath the arms is 'Special Constable' in gold lettering with '1914-1919’ date. The rear has the SC’s name ‘William Crossley’ in gold. The decoration is crisp. It has a deep grooved grip with rounded end and original wrist strap impressed by the maker ‘Hiatt’s Birm(ingham)’. The wood is undamaged with no dents. The Truncheon comes with his bronze Great War KC medal in very good condition. The rim has Mr Crossley’s name. The medal has its original ribbon & correct ‘great war 1914-18’ clasp. The framed sepia photo titled Stockport Traders Company of Special Constables features the Company’s Special Constables in Uniform together with the mayor of Stockport. The rear of the frame has Stockport framer’s label (illustrated). This is an excellent set to a British Police to a Special Constable who served throughout WW1 and beyond. English, Bristol 1796 Dated King George III Engraved Brass & Wood Tipstaff / Stave. Sn 23051 - 23051
During the Georgian era (1714-1830s), Bristol, England had no unified, professional police force. Law enforcement relied on an uncoordinated system of local initiatives, primarily involving parish constables and night watchmen, supplemented by town officials and in times of serious unrest the military. The tip staff is one of the earliest forms of Police authority, carried by the early Constables/ Watchmen as signs of their authority and right to enforce law. This is an excellent original Georgian Tipstaff / Stave. The Tipstaff is 14 ¾” overall length. It has a 10” brass top section with acorn finial. The brass is hand engraved with Crown GR III (King George III Rex) above ‘Bristol’ and ‘1796’ date. The turned wood baluster type handle is grooved for grip.
