INERT DEACTIVATED. This is an extremely rare to find, original 1940 dated, German No 17A, bomb fuze to be used together with the anti-handling Zus 40 fuze. This fuze when used with the Zus 40 was designed to kill bomb disposal officers and was used with high explosive bombs. The 17A fuze according to the August 1942 edition ‘SUMMARY OF GERMAN (RHEINMETAL) ELECTRIC FUZES states that the fuze was often used in conjunction with the anti-withdrawal Zus 40 fuze. The 17A fuze has the following differences. 1 The idle plunger A is omitted, 2 The clock is reversed, end for end, 3 The clock is fitted with a second detent; this prevents premature firing, 4 The 2 detents are released by the softening of thermoplastic pellets, and NOT pyrotechnically. The fuze is also slightly longer than the usual German bomb fuzes. The fuse has an alloy top with a blackened lower casing and an alloy base for holding the Zus 40 anti-handling fuze. The fuze is stamped at the top EI. A.Z. 17 (in a circle) A Rh.S 1940 (date) and only has one plunger fitted.
