RARE, Victorian Or Earlier Medieval / Italian Renaissance Form Battle Shield With Ornate Decoration. Sn 13596 - 13596
The Victorian era saw a revival of interest in objects from the renaissance and ancient medieval cultures that influenced architecture, decoration, furnishings and art. This renewed awareness led to an intense affinity of arms and armour from those periods of history and production of quality authentic reproduction arms and armour. This is a fine medieval/ renaissance form battle shield. Its excellent quality and form indicates that it is either a Victorian reproduction or possibly a much earlier piece. The iron shield is 24” diameter with a rope effect and riveted rim. The surface of the shield elegantly curves to form a conical point which in its original form would allow the carrier to strike opponent’s, allowing the shield to be used for both defence and attack. This form also provides strength to the structure and would assist deflection of striking weapons. The whole surface of the shield has beautifully etched panels in the Italian Renaissance style featuring religious, hunting, mythical and battle iconography. The shield retains its original shape and original 4 carry strap lugs. The rear of the shield has its original leather riveted padding and a rope carry handle secured to 2 of the lugs. The shield has even patina and just one small crack approx. 5mm length to one side of the conical boss which is only visible on close inspection and does not detract from the attractiveness of the piece. The price for this quality shield worthy of further research includes UK delivery. Sn 13596

Framed Hand Stitched Silk Boer War Battle Honours Of The 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment (63rd Foot) With Silver Wire Embroidery. Sn 10429 - 10429
Amidst growing tension between Boers and the British in the Transvaal, the 1st Manchester shipped to South Africa in September 1899. The Battalion arrived in Durban, Natal Colony in early October and was soon afterwards moved to Ladysmith. The War began on 11 October with a Boer invasion of the Colony. After Boer forces captured Elandslaagte railway station, the Manchesters had four companies sent by armoured train to Modderspruit. While disembaking there, the Manchesters and accompanying Imperial Light Horse came under artillery fire. The 1st Manchesters, along with a number of other Regiments, took part in the subsequent assault. The fighting was heavy, with the Boers pouring accurate fire into the advancing Manchesters. Under increasingly heavy fire the 1st Manchesters became the main vanguard of the frontal assault. On 2 November, Boer forces encircled and isolated the town of Ladysmith, beginning a 118-day siege. On 6 January 1900, a contingent of 16 soldiers of the 1st Manchesters came under attack at Wagon Hill, near to Caeser's Camp. Against superior numbers, the detachment held its position for 15 hours. Only two survived. Both survivors received the Victoria Cross for their actions, giving the Regiment its first two VCs. By 28 February, Ladysmith had finally been relieved by a force under the command of General Redvers Buller. The 1st Manchester's then participated in the offensive which followed the relieving of Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafeking. This is a beautiful original framed Silk Boer War Battle honours of the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment (63rd Foot). The hand embroided silk with silver wire features a banner '1st Batt Manchester Regt' above Battle Honours of the Regiment, Union flag, Star with Crown '63' (Foot) and Manchester's 'Egypt' embroided badge above banner '99-00 South Africa 01-02'. The Silk is undamaged with no mothing and retains all of it's original vivid colour and hand embroidery stitching. The silk is contained in it's glazed dark wood frame which measures 27 x25 x1 1/2 inches. The rear of the frame is mounted with cord for wall hanging. Price for this impressive original Boer War piece to a Battalion of the Manchester Regiment which saw much action during the Boer Wars includes UK delivery. Sn 10429
