1785-1819, Cased Pair Of English, T. Ketland & Co London 54 Bore, Box Lock Flintlock Pistols With Turn Off Barrels & Accessories. Sn 17712. - 17712
Thomas Ketland & Co were English gunsmith's based at various addresses in Birmingham & London between 1785-1819. This is a quality pair of Flintlock pocket pistols by Ketland & Co. They are each 5 ¾” overall with 1 ¾” screw off steel barrels. The actions are engraved on both sides with Martial banners. The left side is engraved by the manufacturer 'T. Ketland & Co', the right 'London'. Each action beneath the pan are marked ‘KWAA’ most likely factory inspection marks. The underside of both pistols have crisp English proofs. They have steel hammers fitted with flints and steel trigger guards. Both have sliding safety bolts. The pistols have undamaged bag shaped walnut grips. The pistols cocks and dry fire as they should with a strong spring action. The pistols come with their later fitted Mahogany case with hinged lid and hook fastener. The case is lined in green baize and snugly fits the pistols and their accessories which consist of a copper and brass powder flask with sprung nozzle and brass tipped wood ram rod. Remington double-barrel pocket derringers were popular weapons for American Wild West gamblers as they could easily be concealed. The Remington design lives on today in the form of quality firearms grade pistols from Italian manufacturers Uberti, Pietta, and Euroarms. This is an excellent double barrel derringer similar in form to Remington models by Uberti Italy. The pistol has two 2 ¾” barrels set over and under and measures 5 ¼” overall. The pistol is stainless steel and has chequered panel wood grips. The pistol is signed by the Italian maker Uberti, has inspection marks, calibre detail ‘Cal .38 SP’ and matching numbers ‘4724’ on the barrel cluster and frame . It has a sheathed trigger. The barrels are released for loading by operation of a lever and a knurled steel button on the frame of the pistol. Deactivated to UK specification in 1997 the pistol cocks and dry fires & its barrels are open over bored and will accept inert rounds. The derringer is contained in its wood case with hinged lid and clasp fastener. The inside of the case is lined with purple felt and is contoured to fit the derringer and its accessories which consist of 5 x inert deactivated rounds of .38 Special ammunition and a black leather Bianchi model 18D holster . The holster made for concealed carry on a belt or boot has a metal ‘Bianchi’ signed belt bar to the rear. The holster has a retaining strap with press stud fastener. The Civil Guard (Spanish: Guardia Civil) is the oldest law enforcement agency in Spain and is one of two national police forces. As a national gendarmerie force, it is military in nature and is responsible for civil policing under the authority of both the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence. During the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39 the Guardia Civil forces split almost evenly between those who remained loyal to the Republic. Their contribution to the war efforts on both sides were invaluable & proved effective in urban combat. The symbol of the Guardia Civil consists of the Royal Crown of Spain, a sword and a fasces (bundle of rods and axe). This German Mauser is a Spanish military contract weapon issued to the Civil Guard (Guardia Civil ). The woodwork and metal work are in nice undamaged condition. The barrel shank has the emblem of the Civil Guard The barrel is numbered W1938 and has calibre detail (illustrated). It is complete bayonet lug, adjustable rear sight, fixed fore sight, steel butt plate and sling swivels. It has a 23 ½” barrel and is 43 ½” overall length. The rifle is accompanied by its WW2 era Spanish M1941 Bolo Blade Bayonet & Scabbard. The bayonet has a distinctive 9 ½” long Bolo shaped blade and is stamped on the ricasso with Crown Mark (most likely Toledo arsenal). On the reverse it is stamped with number "1523 L". The bayonet has undamaged original wood chequered grips secured with two screw bolts (see 'An Illustrated History Of Bayonets' By Martin Brayley, Page 199). Its original steel scabbard has a frog locket and the throat is numbered 5370 P. Deactivated to early UK specification in 1993 the rifle cocks and dry fires. The Boer Republics of the Orange Free State (OVS or Oranje Vrij Staat) and the South African Republic (ZAR or Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) had been at odds with the British Empire for decades. Events led to open hostilities and Knowing War with the British Empire was imminent, the Boers rushed to purchase firearms to arm their citizen-soldier Kommandos and shipments of German Mauser Rifles were purchased by the ZAR and OVS States. This Mauser Model 1896 Mounted Infantry Carbine is one of the weapons purchased by the Boers. The woodwork and metal work are in nice undamaged condition. The breech housing is stamped 'MOD MAUSER 1896 LUDW. LOEWE & CO BERLIN' together with number '1777' which is repeated on the magazine plate. The breech has Imperial German inspection mark. It is complete with original bayonet lug, folding ladder sight, fixed fore sight, steel butt plate, sling swivels set for mounted infantry, across the chest carry & additional saddle ring. WW2 Era British RAF Aircraft Fuselage Mountable Webley No 4 MK 1* 1 ½” Calibre Flare / Signal Pistol & Holster **UK/EU 2018 DEACTIVATION CERTIFICATED**D 5970 - D 5970
These Webley signal pistols were designed to be mounted onto a bracket fixed to the fuselage of aircraft by means of a bracket / bar on the butt of the pistol. The pistols fired coloured flares, either when in distress or for identification purposes. An aircraft fired on would fire the "colours of the day" a combination of two or more colours, changed daily - to prove that they were friendly. There is some evidence that RAF bomber crews were told the German colours of the day, information presumably obtained via the code-breakers at Bletchley Park. It has a blackened steel frame which has even aged patina. Its black chequered panel vulcanite grips are undamaged. It has a 4” barrel and measures 7 ¾” overall. The butt has the correct bracket / bar . The pistol is serial number 87794. The action is stamped No.4 Mk1*. The pistol comes with its original leather holster. The holster is in excellent condition. It has a full flap cover with single retaining strap and brass stud fastener to the body. The rear of the holster has its brass riveted single belt loop. The holster has its original leather short cross belt with brass buckle. The strap is stitched to the holster. All leather, rivets and stitching are intact. William Schermuly was a seaman & inventor born in 1857 of Dutch origin. He was famous for his invention of sea rescue, line throwing apparatus including rockets and flare pistols. This is an excellent condition British WW1 era Schermuly’s patent brass Trench flare pistol. It has its original undamaged wood grips. The pistol is serial number '10835' which is stamped on the frame and barrel block. The left side is stamped 'Schermuly's' Patent’ and has inspection marks. The pistol has a 5 ½” barrel with flared muzzle. It measures 10” overall. The pistol comes with its original leather holster. The holster is in excellent condition. It has a full flap cover with single retaining strap and brass stud fastener to the body. The rear of the holster has its brass riveted single belt loop. The holster has its original leather cross belt/ shoulder strap with brass buckle. The strap is stitched to the holster. All leather, rivets and stitching are intact. **RARE**Early WW1 Occupied Belgium German Military 27mm Calibre 'Kommandantur Lille' Pattern Flare / Signal Pistol UK 2020 DEACTIVATION CERTIFICATED**D 5969 - D 5969
An scarce and original WW1 German 27mm Kdtur Lille (Kommandantur Lille) flare/signal pistol. This is a good example of a German Ersatz or substitute weapon that was manufactured during the Great War. Whilst Belgium was under German occupation these large flare pistols were produced at the Lille depot. As with most Ersatz weapons function and simplicity was key. It has a heavy steel barrel with side mounted push latch and a hinged opening. At the rear is a simple plunger cocking mechanism. They were produced to help supplement the short fall in standard weapons manufacture. Production numbers were very limited. It has the 'Kdtur LILLE' (Kommandantur Lille) contract stamp on the left wooden grip. The flare pistol has a 7 ¾” long steel barrel. The frame and barrel have matching serial number "8305", ‘5’ is repeated on the cocking lever. The action has a ‘D’ inspection mark. The flare pistol has smooth dark wood grips that are secured with two screw bolts. The wood is undamaged with just light bumps and bruises to be expected. The metal has even aged patina to be expected. The pistol’s grip frame is holed for lanyard. Deactivated to UK specification in 2020 the pistol cocks and dry fires. The Colt Single Action Army/ Peacemaker was a single action revolver designed for the U.S. Government by Colt. The revolvers were adopted as the U.S. Army standard military service revolver until 1892 and were favoured by Early Law Enforcement Officers. The Colt Buntline Special was a long-barreled variant of the Colt Single Action Army revolver, which Stuart N. Lake described in his best-selling but largely fictionalized 1931 biography, Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshal. According to Lake, the dime novelist Ned Buntline commissioned the production of five Buntline Specials. Lake described them as extra-long Colt Single Action Army revolvers. In 1970 Colt introduced their Peacemaker .22 calibre line of revolvers including their 7 ½” barrel small frame version of the original large frame .45 calibre revolver. This small frame Buntline .22 revolver is side gate loading and has a captive ejector rod. The pistol retains all of its original blue & colour case hardened factory finish. It has undamaged black plastic grips with embossed Colt roundels and embossed American Eagles. It has a 7 ½” barrel with blade foresight grooved cylinder frame rear sight. The pistol measures 13 ¾” overall. The top of the blued barrel has Colt's Hartford CT USA address and the left of the barrel 'Peacemaker Buntline .22'. The pistols serial number is G66050 which dates its manufacture to 1972. Deactivated to UK specification in 2005 the pistol’s blued cylinder is ringed and the pistol cocks and dry fires correctly in single action. In the early 1950s, Westerns were popular in movies and television. Colt had discontinued the iconic Single Action Army prior to World War II, and few single-action revolvers were available to meet market demand for cowboy-style revolvers. In 1953, the new firm of Sturm, Ruger & Company introduced the Single-Six single-action revolver. The Single-Six proved to be a popular seller, leading Ruger to develop and market a centre fire revolver similar to the Colt Single Action Army: the Ruger single six. This Ruger USA Single Six Model .22 Long Round Calibre Western Flat Top Single Action 6 Shot Revolver is in excellent condition. The pistol has a 5 ½” barrel and is 10 ¾” overall length. The pistol retains its original blue finish and has an alloy grip frame. It has a blade foresight and ‘v’ notch plate rear sight. The barrel and frame are crisply marked by the manufacturer with calibre and model detail (all illustrated). The frame is also stamped with serial number ‘169111’ which dates its manufacture to 1960. It is side gate loading and has its original captive ejector slide. Its chequered plastic grips are original, undamaged and have their original Ruger roundels inlaid.
