**RARE**French Foreign Legion Paratroopers Fighting Knife Converted From 1917 Dated Remington U.S. Army Pattern 1913 Bayonet With Scabbard. ED 2579 - ED 2579
A rare example of the French Foreign Legion fighting knife officially made after WW2 by converting a Pattern 1913 U.S. Army Remington bayonet. It was a stop gap issue to their Paratroopers before they were issued the M3 fighting knife. The scabbard was suitably altered by the addition of a leather belt frog. Used as late as 1978 in Zaire these are very scarce knives. Fully documented and photographed in Ron Flooks booklet, 'A Photographic Primer of Military Knifes'. The bayonets slab wood grips with grooves are secured by the correct screw bolts. It’s sprung bayonet lug button works correctly. The shortened fullered blade measures 7 ½” length (12 ½” overall). The blade is blackened. The cross guard has correctly had its muzzle ring removed leaving a small finger guard. One side of the blade has 1913 (pattern) above Remington roundel. The reverse has Frankford arsenal ignited grenade mark U.S (army) mark and ‘7 ’17 date (July 1917). The shortened steel mounted leather scabbard has the correct added leather frog with belt loop & retaining strap with press stud fastener. The leather of the scabbard has original green paint finish. The price for this rare fighting knife includes UK delivery. ED 2579. (Fighting Knives/Hunting Daggers)

**RARE**EARLY PRODUCTION**WW1 French Model 1916 Astier-Prodon,Thiers (Variant of "The Avenger of 1870") Fighting Knife & Scabbard. Sn 18798 - 18798
From 1915 the French begun to develop trench weapons at the Châtellerault arms factory, with Lieutenant-Colonel Coutrot experimenting by converting existing military swords and bayonets into combat daggers. Several designs were decided upon and then sent to be manufactured by private firms. Despite such variety of knives being issued to French troops during the War, there was only one, the Modèle 1916, that received an official military designation. Given this fact, it is strange that the dagger was in fact devised by the cutlery manufacturer Astier-Prodon of Thiers, rather than Châtellerault. It was subsequently produced by a number of other civilian manufacturers to keep up with demand. Early models lack a metal reinforcing ferrule, to strengthen the connection of blade to hilt found on later examples. Some of the Modèle 1916 daggers are marked 'Le Vengeur de 1870' on the blade, referencing the fall of Paris and French defeat in the Franco-Prussian war. This is an excellent, rare, early production French Model 1916 Fighting Knife. WW1 variants by French makers available to French troops are identical to the Avenger of 1870 examples but without the Avenger inscription, see page 29 items 109 & 110 of Fighting Knives by Fred Stephens where a similar Model 1916 / Avenger variant to ours is illustrated, with a scabbard identical to ours. Our knife has a 6 ¾” long clean double edged dagger blade with medial ridge and is correctly the same form as those found on European manufactured versions of the American pattern 1918 knuckle daggers. The blade is without Avenger inscription, the shank is crisply manufacturer marked ‘Astier-Prodon, Thiers’ together with 3 clover leaf trademark. The flat, shaped steel cross guard has a faint acceptance stamp which appears to be */B. The knife measures 11 ¼” overall length. The original solid wood grip has a flat, round steel pommel tang screw / bolt. The hilt is without ferrule indicating early production. The wood has just one old stable chip on one side near to the pommel. The blade and grip are totally secure with no movement. The correct original scabbard is steel has correct elongated belt loop bar. The scabbard has no damage. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 18798

Late Victorian/ Edwardian Era Bali / Indonesian Native Kris Dagger With Antique Ivory Hilt, Hand Forged Acid Wash Blade, Antique Ivory Scabbard & Antique Ivory Chop Sticks / Hair Tools Mounted On Period Hand Carved Grotesque Murti Vengeful God Stand. - 17740
The Kris is a type of dagger, traditionally worn as a status symbol and carried by warriors. These daggers were said to have originated in Java in the 14th Century but were adopted in all parts of the Archipelago with broad variations between the islands of Bali, Java & Sumatra. The Kris is characterised by its distinctive wavy blade (see 383 to 393 of ‘A Glossary Of The Construction Decoration & Use Of Arms & Armour by Stone where many variants of Kris are described and illustrated). Often these daggers were mounted on carved wood Kris stands in the form of dancers or Grotesque Murti God figures for display in homes and temples (examples of these stands, two with similar grotesque faces as ours are illustrated on page 393 of Stone’s book). The blade of the Kris dagger is given its characteristic shape by folding different types of metal together and then washing it in acid. Kris were often infused with arsenic to add colour / brightness during their forging but the method of doing this was a closely guarded secret among Smiths. This is an excellent Bali / Indonesian Kris made in the late 1800's -Early 1900's. It has a 13 ½” long acid washed, hand forged Kris blade which incorporates its ornate barbed design at the hand guard. The antique ivory hilt is hand carved with typical stylised birds head form and it has an ornate copper or brass ferrule. The dagger measures 16” overall and is complete with its original antique ivory scabbard which has metal bands. The Kris is accompanied by 2 period antique ivory chop sticks / hair tools which are each 7 ¾” length. All are mounted on their original period Kris stand. Hand carved from tropical hardwood and painted in vivid red, white, green black and gold colours the full body sculpture of a kneeling Grotesque figure with ornate ceremonial crown, armour & war like face is typical of Murti vengeful / protective God sculptures seen in Bali / Indonesia. The stand measures 21” tall and the base width is 9 ½” diameter. The base is covered in red felt. One clenched fist of the sculpture is holed to fit the Kris in its scabbard and chop sticks / hair tools. The price for this highly decorative ethnic piece includes UK delivery. Sn 17740
