**MINT**Cased, Limited Edition D.L.I. Blade 406 Of 500, WW2 Commemorative Wilkinson Sword Fairbairn Sykes 3rd Pattern FS Fighting Knife 'United We Conquer 1940-1945' With Etched Blade & Factory Commissioned Durham Light Infantry Regiment Badge. Sn 21321 - 21321 The British Commandos were formed in the early stages of the Second World War, in June 1940, following a request from the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, for a force that could carry out raids against German-occupied Europe. Initially drawn from within the British Army from soldiers who volunteered for the Special Service Brigade, the Commandos' ranks would eventually be filled by members of all branches of the United Kingdom's armed forces and a number of foreign volunteers from German-occupied countries. Reaching a war time strength of over 30 individual units and four assault brigades, the Commandos served in all theatres of war from the Arctic Circle to Europe and from the Mediterranean and Middle East Theatre to South-East Asia. Their operations ranged from small groups of men landing from the sea or by parachute to a brigade of assault troops spearheading the Allied invasions of Europe and Asia. All Commandos were issued with the iconic FS Fighting knife. This attractive full size (11 1/2" overall) 3rd pattern FS Commando dagger was produced post WW2 by Wilkinson Sword in a Limited Edition of 500 blades to Commemorate the British Commandos WW2 Service 1940-1945 (see page 97 items 482 & 483 of Fighting Knives by Stephens). The knife is in near mint condition. It has a 180mm long nickel plated blade etched on both sides in gilt, one side ‘1940-1945’ the reverse ‘United We Conquer’. The ricasso of one side is etched with the Wilkinson Sword manufacturer's panel & QEII Royal Appointment. The reverse has blade number ‘W (Wilkinson) 309 (blade number of 500)’ there is also a factory etched Regimental badge of the Durham Light Infantry gilt etched on the blade no doubt commissioned by the original owner at time of purchase from Wilkinson (the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) was an Infantry Regiment of the British Army from 1881 to 1968). The cross guard is nickel plated. The ribbed handle is brass with gilt finish. The dagger is contained in its original ‘Wilkinson Sword Fairbairn Sykes London’ marked quality leatherette wrapped wooden case. The case has a hinged lid and clasp fasteners. 1983 Gib Baxter Watercolour Painting Of Operation Colossus The 1st British Airborne Assault By X Troop 1941 To Destroy An Aqueduct Near Calitri Italy. Sn 20790 - 20790 Operation Colossus was the codename given to the first airborne operation undertaken by the British military, which occurred on 10 February 1941 during World War II. The first airborne unit to be formed was actually a re-trained Commando unit, No. 2 Commando, which was subsequently renamed as No. 11 Special Air Service Battalion and numbered approximately 350 officers and other ranks by September 1940. The battalion finished its training in December 1940 and in February 1941 thirty-eight members of the battalion, known as X Troop, were selected to conduct an airborne operation, which was intended to test the capability of the airborne troops and their equipment, as well as the ability of the Royal Air Force to accurately deliver them. The target chosen for the operation was a fresh-water aqueduct near Calitri in southern Italy, which supplied water to a large portion of the Italian population as well as several ports used by the Italian armed forces; it was also hoped that its destruction would hamper Italian military efforts in North Africa and Albania. The airborne troops were delivered by converted Armstrong Whitworth Whitley medium bombers to the target on 10 February but equipment failures and navigational errors meant that a significant portion of the troop's explosives and a team of Royal Engineer sappers, landed in the wrong area. Despite this setback the remaining members of the troop destroyed the aqueduct and withdrew from the area. All were captured by the Italian authorities within a short time; an Italian translator was tortured and executed and one paratrooper managed to escape but the rest remained as prisoners of war. This is an excellent original watercolour painting of members of X Troop parachuting from their Whitworth Whitley aircraft over harsh terrain at the start of their heroic mission to destroy the aqueduct. The painting is signed by the artist ‘Gib Baxter’ and dated ’83 (1983). The paintings colours are vivid. The painting in its glazed wood frame measures 15 ¼” x 19 ¼” x 1 ¼”. **ISSUED BUT UN-USED**WW2 British 3rd Pattern Commando Fairbairn Sykes FS Fighting Knife With No.3 Mould Mark & Original Field Adapted Scabbard. ED 2177 - ED 2177 An excellent original WW2 3rd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife. The 3rd pattern knife was introduced in 1942 (see Chapter 8 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). This example has an undamaged ribbed alloy handle which retains some of its blackened finish and a clean 168mm steel blade with medial ridge. It has a number 3 mould mark on the ribbed 3rd pattern alloy handle. The blackened oval cross guard is steel. The dagger is complete with correct original leather scabbard in nice condition with external brass chape and belt loop. The scabbard retains its original 4 sewn on leather tabs and elastic retaining strap which as is common has perished in the middle. The rear of the scabbard has a period field adaption by the addition of a large leather belt loop being stitched to the back of the original belt loop for carry on a wide belt. **RARE**ORIGINAL 1st PATTERN HILT**STERILE**WW2, 2nd Pattern, Wilkinson British Officer's, Grey Or Matt Nickel Plated Hilt, Fairbairn Sykes FS Fighting Knife & Scabbard. Sn 20163 - 20163 2nd Pattern 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941. This is a rare example of the WW2, 2nd Pattern, Officer's fighting knife with 1st Pattern coarsely knurled nickel plated brass hilt which has a grey or matt nickel finish and 2nd pattern oval steel cross guard (see page 93 of ‘the Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook where he describes & illustrates a 2nd pattern FS with 1st pattern hilt. He comments that knives with 1st pattern hilts but without Wilkinson logos has led many collectors to conclude that they are in fact a Wilkinson product). It has a clean 167mm double edged dagger blade with medial ridge. The knife has no maker, date or inspection marks. The dagger is complete with original scabbard with belt loop & brass chape. Sn 20444:18 - 20444:18 This is an original WW2 3rd pattern Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife in excellent condition (see Chapter 8 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). WW2 Era British 2nd Pattern Nickel Plated Officer’s 'Sterile' Fairbairn Sykes FS Commando Fighting Knife & Scabbard. Sn 20444:17 - 20444:17 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941. This is a very good condition WW2 Officer’s 2nd pattern, FS dagger and scabbard. Examples of Nickel plated FS daggers are illustrated in Chapter 7 of ‘The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives’ by Flook. The dagger has the correct nickel plated brass knurled handle & oval cross guard. The knife is ‘sterile’ with no manufacturer or Unit marks. The knife has a 177 mm long blade with medial ridge. The blade is clean. Its original scabbard has a nickel plated chape and integral belt loop. AS is common its original 4 sewn on leather tabs have been cut back in the period and its original elasticated retaining strap is absent. Sn 20444:12 - 20444:12 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes 'FS' Fighting Knives were introduced in 1941 (see page 89-93 of The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife & Other Commando Knives By Flook). This is an original, near mint, British made WW2 2nd pattern, FS dagger and scabbard in excellent condition. The hilt is blackened brass with knurled grip and a blued steel oval cross guard. The cross guard is faintly stamped ‘B2’ with crisp ‘WD arrow’ (a British FS designation) over ‘England’ indicating export to USA for Airborne & Ranger issue post WW2 in the 1950’s from wartime stock (see page 213 of Flook’s book where he describes an FS dagger with cross guard stamped ‘England’ as being a USA 1950’s export item from British war time stock). It has a 173 mm long double edged blued blade with medial ridge. The knife has its original scabbard with external blackened chape. Cased Post 1952 QEII British Wilkinson Sword ‘Best Officer Commando On Course Prize’ Nickel Plated 3rd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes FS Fighting Knife With Etched Panel. Sn 20444:11 - 20444:11 An excellent, original, 3rd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife with etched Wilkinson Sword panel. These post WW2 quality knives were reputedly presented to the ‘best officer commando on course’ after completion of their arduous training and are highly prized fully functional fighting knives. The 3rd pattern knife was introduced in 1942 (see page 61 & 62 of British & Commonwealth Military Knives By Flook) and continued to be issued post war. This Commando Officer’s prize has an undamaged ribbed and Nickel Plated alloy handle and oval Nickel Plated steel cross guard. It has a 174mm dagger blade with medial ridge.
