WWII Burma Campaign Chindit Special Forces, Fighting Knife / Combat Bowie & Scabbard. ED 2470. - ED 2470
The Chindits – officially in 1943 designated the 77th Indian Infantry Brigade and in 1944, the 3rd Indian Infantry Division was a British "Special Force" that served in Burma and India in 1943 and 1944 during the Burma Campaign in WW2. This is an original combat Bowie carried by Chindit troops. These fighting knives were manufactured in India during WW2 and come in a number of variations. An example the same as ours is illustrated on page 205 plate 493 of Flook’s book British & Commonwealth Military Knives. AS is common with these knives there are no manufacturer or date marks on our example. The wood slab grips are secured to the Tang by 3 rivets. The grips have knocks, bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use. It has a single edged 6 ¾” long blade with correct Bowie type tip. The blade has staining consistent with age. The correct original scabbard is made of leather, stitched along the edges and has a single belt loop to the rear of the scabbard. The scabbard has the correct leather retaining strap with eyelet and brass stud. The price includes UK delivery. ED 2470.

1969 British Officer’s Gurkha Presentation Kukri With Buffalo Horn Grip, Chromed Lion’s Head Pommel & Scabbard With Presentaion Plate To ‘Capt P. Laverack From The Officer’s HQ 99th Gurkha Infantry Brigade’. ED 270. - ED 270
Captain Patrick Laverack joined the British Army in 1947 and was posted to Singapore in the mid 1960’s. He was posted to the 99th Gurkha Brigade at Nee Soon Garrison & in 1972 on his departure from the Brigade he was honoured with the presentation of a Military quality Kukri and scabbard. The kukri has a 12” single edged curved blade with fuller & measures 16 ½” overall. The blade has foliate stipple engraved decoration to the ricasso, The buffalo horn grip has chromed mounts including a Lion’s head pommel cap. It has its original wood lined, leather scabbard which has a chromed chape. The scabbard has 2 pockets for skinners which are absent and is mounted with a chromed presentation plate inscribed `Presented to Captain P. Laverack by the Officers HQ 99 Gurkha Infantry Brigade 1969`. The leather and stitching of the scabbard are loose to the rear-see images. A typed short biographical note from the family of Capt Laverack accompanies this piece. The note contains the information outlined above re the Officer’s posting to The Gurkhas). A large Victorian era American combat / survival Bowie knife and leather scabbard based on a 'Collins' knife. This is a large unusual American combat / survival Bowie Knife which has a compressed leather washer grip. The base of the grip and pommel are nonferrous cast metal. The pommel screws off. It has a large 12" blade, 2" wide at its widest point and 17" overall with falchion style tip and twin narrow fullers. The blade is stamped with "R.A. Bone Cast Steel" and a large Lion trade mark. This is a quality bowie knife by John Nowill & Sons of Sheffield who have been making quality knives in Sheffield since 1700. The family have traded under various names until John Nowill acquired the cross keys trademark in 1842. This kife has a 6 inch blade which is marked on the blade with JOHN NOWILL & SONS LTD SHEFFIELD EST A.D 1700 flanked with the cross keys and * over D. the knife has a brass crossguard which is secured by 2 brass rivets and wooden rosewood grips which are all secured by 5 brass rivets. The sheath is mad of brown leather with a retaining strap and press stud fastener at the top. ED 2406.

David North of Killamarsh Sheffield is a manufacturer of quality knives and one of the last 'Cottage Cutlers' to come out of Sheffield. This hand tooled Bowie was made by David North. The spear point steel blade with medial ridge is 6 ¼” long. The knife measures 11” overall length. The ricasso is crisply stamped 'David North Sheffield England'. The knife has a brass cross guard with hand tooled decoration and ornate ferrule. Its grooved wood grip is undamaged. MINT, English Large 'Fred James' Sheffield Made 'America Land Of The Free & Home Of The Brave ' Bowie Knife With Etched Blade, Polished Horn Scales, Embossed Mythical Hybrid Horse / Leopard Brass Pommel & Leather Scabbard. Sn 9266. - Sn 9266
Before his death in 1986 Fred James was Sheffield's best known Bowie Knife maker. He began his career in 1935 at Johnson's Portobello Works & continued work at Wostenholm's Washington Works in 1956. In 1971 when the companies of Wostenholm and Rodgers merged, James began his own knife making business (see pages 214-215 of The Sheffield Knife Book By Tweedale). This Fred James Sheffield made Bowie Knife & scabbard are in near mint condition. The knife has polished horn scales secured with steel pins. The brass pommel sections are embossed on both sides with a mythical hybrid Horse / Leopard figure. It has a brass cross guard and the 9” Bowie blade is polished steel with scalloped decoration on the back edge. One side of the blade is etched with elaborate scroll work and wording "America Land Of The Free and The Home Of The Brave". The ricasso is stamped "F. W. James Sheffield". This beautiful, large hand tooled Bowie was made by David North. The mint condition blade is 10" long with a false back edge, it is 1 1/2" wide at its widest point. Fred James Sheffield Hand Made 'The Americans Pride' Bowie Knife With Etched Blade, Ivorine Grips With Mother Of Pearl Inlays & Sheath. Sn 11959. - Sn 11959

This handmade Fred James 'The Americans Pride' Bowie Knife is in excellent condition. The knife has Ivorine scales with Mother of Pearl roundel inlays and brass cross guard. The deep swept 5 ¾” Bowie blade has a scalloped back edge and is etched on one side with American Eagle & scroll work together with "The Americans Pride U*S Equal Rights Equal Laws And Justice". The ricasso is stamped "F.W James Sheffield". The Bowie is 10 ¼” overall length. The Bowie is complete with a black leather sheath which has tooled decoration to the front. *Scarce* Joseph Westby of Sheffield ‘Shooters’ Penknife Advertising ‘Spratts Game/Dog Foods’. Sn:20072. - Sn:20072
A very scarce shooters penknife made by ‘Joseph Westby-Sheffield’ (The firm was apparently established in 1884. The founder was the son of William Westby, who was a manager and then partner at Brookes & Crookes. Joseph was apprenticed at the factory. He was listed as a maker of knives in his own right at Atlantic Works between 1876 and 1888. Westby partnered Charles Swift Levick at Congo Works, Pinfold Street / Trippet Lane, but this ended in 1894. In that year, Joseph Westby & Co Ltd was established at Congo Works, dealing in cutlery, scissors, and electro-plate) advertising ‘Spratts Dog Foods’. The knife is 11 ¾ cm in length. It has 12 & 16 bore shotgun cartridge extractors, corkscrew, lace hook, screwdriver and 6 ¾ cm knife blade with ‘Joseph Westby’ to the tang. The blade has been re-sharpened is showing signs of age related wear. The penknife’s covering has ‘SPRATT’S DOG/GAME FOODS’, Sheffield, Spratts Patent and 12-16 imprinted. **AS FOUND**Original WW1 British Un-Named Robbins Of Dudley Type Alloy Hilt Trench Fighting Knife Push Dagger With Steel Knuckle Bow (Hilt Has Manufacture Casting Fault) & Scabbard. Sn 19912 - 19912
Robbins of Dudley were a metal working Company in Dudley Worcester England who at the outbreak of WW1 began making Trench Fighting weapons. Their work was copied in the era by other British manufacturers (see page 24 and illustration plates 32-34 of British & Commonwealth Military Knifes by Ron Flook where Robbins of Dudley examples similar to our un-named example are illustrated). This is an original, WW1 Robbins Of Dudley type trench/ fighting knife push dagger in as found condition by an unknown maker. It has an alloy handle which has a manufacture casting fault near to the blade which can be seen in the images causing the blade to be loose. It has a flat steel knuckle shaped bow and steel blade. The knife has a total length of 6 ¼” and the double edged blade with central blood grooves is 4 ¾” length. The blade has small areas of staining consistent with age. The handle and blade have no manufacturer marks. The knife is complete with its original leather scabbard with retaining strap and single stud fastener. The rear has a stitched belt loop.
