David North of Killamarsh Sheffield is a manufacturer of quality knives and one of the last 'Cottage Cutlers' to come out of Sheffield. This hand tooled Bowie was made by David North. The spear point steel blade with medial ridge is 5 ½” long. The knife measures 10 ¼” overall length. The ricasso is crisply stamped 'David North Sheffield England'. The knife has a plated brass cross guard with hand tooled decoration, ornate ferrule and pommel. Its ivorine grip is undamaged. Late Victorian Masonic Knife With Ebony Handle Inlaid With Mother Of Pearl Studs By Henry Hobson & Sons Sheffield Blade Engraved ‘Masonic Lodge No 51’ & Leather Sheath. Sn 12516:1 - 12516:1
Henry Hobson & Sons were Sheffield based cutlers. The business was established in Sheffield by Henry Hobson in 1845. A London branch was opened in 1852 and later styled George Hobson & Sons. Their Queen Street factory moved to Carver Street (1901) and then to Eyre Lane, Sheffield (1912). This is an attractive sheath knife by Hobson & Sons with sheath in late Victorian form. It has an ebony handle with raised edges inlaid with mother of pearl studs. It has a German Silver cross guard and a 5” spear point blade with medial ridge. The blade has staining consistent with age but no damage. The blade has a later applied engraving ‘Masonic Lodge No 51’. The knife measures 9” overall length. Its original brown leather open top sheath has a stitched seam and single belt loop. All leather & stitching of the sheath are intact. Fred James Sheffield Hand Made 'I*XL Canadian Hunting Knife' Bowie With Etched Blade, Ivorine Grips With Mother Of Pearl Inlays & Sheath. Sn 11960 - 11960
Before his death in 1986 Fred James was one of Sheffield's best known Bowie Knife makers. He began his career in 1935 at Johnson's Portobello Works & continued work at Wostenholm's Washington Works in 1956. In 1971 when the companies of Wostenholm and Rodgers merged, James began his own knife making business (see pages 214-215 of The Sheffield Knife Book By Tweedale). This handmade Fred James 'Canadian Hunting Knife' is in excellent condition. The knife has Ivorine scales with Mother of Pearl roundel inlays and brass cross guard with clipped edge decoration. The deep swept 6” Bowie blade has a tooled back edge and is etched on one side with banner containing wording ‘The Real I*XL Knife’ above bold lettering ‘Canadian Hunting Knife'. The ricasso is stamped "F.W James Sheffield". The Bowie is 10 ½” overall length. The Bowie is complete with a black leather sheath which has tooled decoration to the front. A silver bladed hallmarked 1908-1910 Sheffield pocket knife with mother of pearl slabs manufactured by Allen & Darwin of Sheffield. The knife has very nice mother of pearl slabs which are secured with three pins. On one there is a silver inlaid name plate with "Percy" engraved on it. See the photographs. The blade is hallmarked silver and has the makers mark "A & D" (Allen & Darwin). The blade is in excellent condition and locks out firmly and with no play. It closes and is firm when closed. A silver bladed hallmarked 1920-1921 Sheffield pocket knife with engraved mother of pearl slabs manufactured by John Yeomans Cowlishaw of Market Street, Sheffield. The knife has very nice engraved mother of pearl slabs which are secured with three pins. On one there is a silver crest inlaid with "L J" engraved on it. The engraving is of a high quality. See the photographs. The blade is hallmarked silver and has the makers mark "JYC" (John Yeomans Cowlishaw). The blade is in excellent condition and locks out firmly and with no play. It closes and is firm when closed. The blade measures 62mm. The knife measures 85mm when closed and 145 overall with the blade open. At the hinge it has plain silver ends. A little used Victorian silver bladed, hallmarked 1896-1897 Sheffield pocket knife with mother of pearl slabs. The knife has excellent quality, shaped mother of pearl slabs which are secured with three pins. One slab has an inset silver name plate which is blank. It has an ornately engraved end at the blade hinge. It has a single hallmarked silver blade which is tight when folded and open. It has no play when open. The blade measures 60mm. A Victorian 1879-80 hallmarked silver bladed pocket knife with mother of pearl slabs and engraved silver mounts. The slabs are made from quality pieces of mother of pearl and have a very nice appearance. The slabs are secured with three pins. One slab has an inlaid name plate with "Ged Marsh" engraved on it. The knife is silver mounted with an ornately engraved end. It has a full length hallmarked silver blade hallmarked to 1954-55. (see one of the photographs). The makers stamp "T.M." also stamped on the blade. The blade is in excellent condition and is firm and locks out without any play. It measures 60mm and the knife measures 84mm closed and 145mm open. Post 1900, Large Folding Pen Knife With German Silver & Mother Of Pearl Scales Engraved With Cyrillic/ Hebrew Script By Walker & Hall Sheffield. Sn 10789 - 10789
The Sheffield based Cutler George Walker is recorded as operating as a 'knife forger' in 1845. In 1853 the firm was joined by Henry Hall of Worcester and became 'Walker & Hall' based at the Elecro Works in Howard Street, Sheffield. Walker & Hall are believed to have been the biggest employer in the cutlery trade prior to WW1 (see page 284 of The Sheffield Knife Book by Tweedale). This is an excellent folding pen knife by Walker and Hall made post 1900. It has a clean 4 1/2" single edged folding blade and measures 9 3/4" when open. The blade is marked by the manufacturer 'Walker & Hall Sheffield'. It has German Silver scales inset with attractive undamaged Mother Of Pearl sections which are engraved on one side with Cyrillic/ Hebrew Script which is worthy of further research. A nice 10" long, Victorian era English Spear Point Belt dagger & Scabbard. It has wood scales. One scale has a void German silver shield mount and oval crossguard. It has a 6" double edged, spear point steel blade with medial ridge, marked crisply at the ricasso, "Johnson Western Works Sheffield" with trademark.
