Swiss Vetterli M1878 Saw Backed Bayonet, Scabbard & Rare Dated Frog - BAYO 276 This is a scarce earlier version of the Swiss Vetterli M1878 saw backed bayonet with 4 rivets to the grip. The later almost identically M1881 pattern only had 3 rivets. This example is marked to the blade with S.J.C. NEUHAUSEN and the crossguard carries the number 183719. The blade derives from the British Elcho bayonet and copies many of the features but unlike the Elcho bayonet is only fullered on one side only. In this respect it has black chequered grips, a spatulate type crossguard and a saw backed blade. The bayonet is contained in its steel mounted black leather scabbard with all of the stitching intact. The scabbard is fitted with a brown leather frog and has the makers name J. OBERLI WORB and 87 plus a Swiss cross over B within a rectangle. Dated frogs from this period are rare and together with the excellent condition bayonet and scabbard makes this a desirable set. See White and Watts, The Bayonet Book, item no 600 on pages 265 and 269.The price includes UK delivery. BAYO 276 £575.00
