German Dress Bayonet and Scabbard, M98 pattern. BAYO 760. - BAYO 760
The dress sidearm for the military and civilian uniformed formations was designated the ‘M98’ dress bayonet. A blade length of 20cm (7 ¾ “) indicated NCO personnel, while the 25cm (9 ¾ “) length was utilised by the rest of the enlisted personnel. The dress bayonet has a rifle mortise, but cannot be fitted to a rifle. The stud button is functional, but the mortise was often too small for the attachment lug on the ‘M98’ Mauser rifle. This example has the 9 ¾ “ blade which denotes other ranks. It has the makers name ‘E & F Hörster – Solingen’ (Founded in 1850, Hörster E. & F. Co., Solingen, made military edged weapons through WWII) the blade doesn’t appear to have been re sharpened and is in very good condition. The black plastic chequered grips are held with two pins are in excellent condition and are above a hooked quillon. The scabbard is polished steel and the furniture is in excellent condition. He is most famous for commanding the German battlecruisers of the I Scouting Group during World War I, particularly at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May – 1 June 1916. During the war, Hipper led the German battlecruisers on several raids of the English coast, for which he was vilified in the English press as a "baby killer". His squadron clashed with the British battlecruiser squadron at the Battle of Dogger Bank in January 1915, where the armoured cruiser Blücher was lost. At the Battle of Jutland, Hipper's flagship Lützow was sunk, though his ships succeeded in sinking three British battlecruisers. In 1918 he was promoted to succeed Admiral Reinhard Scheer as commander of the High Seas Fleet. A class heavy cruiser, the third of a class of five vessels. German WWI M1898/05 ‘Butcher Bayonet’ and Scabbard. BAYO 767. - BAYO 767
The Bayonet M1898/05 should succeed the M1898 long bayonet. It had a much stronger design but was still very long. In the beginning of the Great War it came with high ears and without flash guard. The M1898 ‘New Pattern’ was missing the ‘ears’ and is characterised by the addition of a thin sheet of steel as muzzle fire protection on top of the grip. The original German First World War butcher blade bayonet was used with the Mauser Gewehr 98 (GEW 98) the standard issue service rifle of Imperial Germany. This example was manufactured by ‘V.C.Shilling – SUHL’ as stamped on one side of the ricasso. The undersid of the spine has a number ‘3’ stamped and the top of the spine is stamped with a date code ‘W 15’ (1915) and inspection stamps. The top of the pommel has two further inspection stamps. The wooden grips are held with two studs, one of which has an inspection stamp. The correct steel scabbard is showing signs of age related wear. See ‘White & Watts’ The bayonet Book, pages 114 & 123, No 267. The price includes UK postage and packing. BAYO 767.
