British 1856/58 Sword Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 771. - BAYO 771
This is a good example of the 1856/58 sword bayonet maker ‘A & A.S’ (A & A Schnitzler Solingen). From 1858 the use of more machinery enabled closer tolerances to make bayonets and in doing so made the bayonets interchangeable instead of bayonets being individually fitted to a particular rifle. This bayonet has a slightly longer leaf spring for the locking bolt and was secured by a screw and not as previously with a rivet on the P 1856 bayonet. The bayonet is 28 inches long with a blade length of 22 Ύ inches. The blade has minor signs of age related wear. The grips are made of chequered black leather held by steel pins. The scabbard is made of black double stitched leather with steel top mount and chape. (See Skennerton page 114-115- B151) The price includes UK delivery. BAYO 771.

*Scarce* India Pattern 1907 Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 439. - BAYO 439
This is a scarce India 1907 ‘Ishapore’ bayonet made from 1914 and identical to the British model 1907 bayonet except for the markings on the ricasso. This carries the royal cypher of crown over ‘G.R.I & 1907’ followed by 9 20 (September 1920) & R.F.I. (Rifle Factory Ishapore). The other side carries a broad arrow and inspection stamps. Skennerton states that some of these bayonets have been noted with locally made brass chapes and lockets which was an official variation; this example is in one of these scabbards. It is rare to find one of these bayonets in original condition, as most were cut down in WWII. This is a nice variant for the 1907 pattern collector. See Skennerton – Indian section item 149 page 346. The price includes UK delivery. BAYO 439. (Box 2)

*Rare* French M1842/59 bayonet and scabbard Sn ED 2198. - ED 2198
This is a French M1842/59 bayonet and steel scabbard, with internal coil spring locking catch instead of the external spring of the Model 42 bayonet, hence its designation. The bayonet has a cast iron cross guard instead of brass cross guard of 1842. This bayonet was short lived from 1859 to 1866 when the Chassepot rifle and bayonet were produced. The bayonet has a brass hilt with a cast iron crossguard and a yataghan blade. The top edge of the blade carries the manufacturer Chattlerault, the date of manufacture January 1861 and the model number date of 1842. The internal coil spring of the M 1859 was not considered successful by the French and the M1866 Chassepot reverted to the leaf spring. These bayonets are not common. See White and Watts No 189 on page 83 and 90. Also see Martin J. Brayley, An Illustrated History of Bayonets, pages 70 and 71. Price includes UK delivery. Sn. ED 2198. (Bucket)
