British 1858 Yatahgan Sword Bayonet and Scabbard. BAYO 363. - BAYO 363 This is a good example of the 1858 sword bayonet. From 1858 the use of more machinery enabled closer tolerances to make bayonets and in doing so made the bayonets interchangeable instead of bayonets being individually fitted to a particular rifle. This bayonet has a slightly longer leaf spring for the locking bolt and was secured by a screw and not as previously with a rivet on the P 1856 bayonet. The bayonet is 716 mm long with a re-curved ‘Yataghan’ blade length of 581mm. The ricasso bears a clearly stamped Kings head mark, which is the makers mark for Weyersburg Company of Solingen, Germany. To the side is a British Solingen inspectors stamp and the obverse has a sale or sold out of service mark . The press-stud and external spring locking mechanism work perfectly and the sharply beaked pommel bears a rack or issue number of ‘138’. The blade has minor signs of age related wear. The grips are made of chequered black leather held by steel pins *minor wear to the top of one side. The scabbard is made of black double stitched leather with steel top mount and chape *play in the chape and top mount and minor repair to the lower part of the scabbard on the left hand side*. *Excellent* British 1888 Mk I 2nd Type Unmarked ‘Trials’ Lee Metford Bayonet and Land Pattern Scabbard. Sn 20821:21. - Sn 20821:21 This is an early, Lee Metford, 1888 Mk I 2nd Type bayonet manufactured for the British .303 calibre Enfield, Lee Metford rifle between 1890 & 1900. The bayonet blade which is in good clean condition, double edged with a medial ridge running from the ricasso to the blade tip. The ricasso and grips of the blade are unmarked which could possibly indicate it being a ‘trials’ bayonet, as a notable feature (according to Skennerton) were that there were no manufacture or inspection marks evident on the blade or grips of such bayonets. There is an oil clearance hole in both of the grips which are showing no signs of service wear. The bayonet is contained in an 1888 Land pattern scabbard which is marked Broad Arrow over Crown ’03 over Crown and is in extremely good condition with all metal and stitch work intact. British 1888 Mark II Lee Metford Bayonet by Wilkinson London and Scabbard. Sn 20821:20. - 20821:20 This is an early Edwardian, Lee Metford, 1888 Mark II bayonet manufactured for the British .303 calibre Enfield, Lee Metford rifle. The bayonet blade which is in good clean condition, double edged and unfullered with a medial ridge running from the ricasso to the blade tip. The ricasso of the blade is also marked with a Crown over "E.R. 11 01 Wilkinson London" (Manufactured November 1901). The reverse is stamped with the broad arrow and an inspection stamp ‘35W’. The grips are of wood, held together with two brass rivets and one side is stamped"49" over "W" below a Crown. There is an oil clearance hole in both of the grips which are showing signs of service wear. The bayonet is contained in a standard 1888 pattern scabbard and is in extremely good condition with all metal and stitch work intact. (See Skennerton's item B217 pages 170-173). 18th Century 3 ¼” Socket Bayonet for the Brown Bess Muzzle Loading Flintlock Muskets. BAYO 361. - BAYO 361 These Brown Bess socket bayonets named after the weapon they were made, for were the standard bayonet of the 18th century for the British army and continued in use until C1842 (see item 656 of the bayonet book by Watts & White where a Brown Bess socket bayonet with 4” long socket similar to our 3” example is illustrated and page 286 of the same book). The typical triangular blade is 425mm in length and it measures 525mm overall length. The 3 ¼ ” long socket’s muzzle diameter is 24mm. The face of the blade is marked ‘H over 6 over crown 3 WIR over WHEELER and ‘38’ to another face. The left hand side of the socket has two 6mm holes present, possibly for museum display? The bayonets blade is straight and the metal work of the bayonet has just light staining consistent with age and no rust. The scabbard is leather with brass chape and locket *slight play* with a tear shaped frog *slight play* *the leather is aged and the stitching is loose in parts to the rear. U.S.S.R. Dragunov (SVD) 7.62mm Wire Cutter Bayonet (1st Model). BAYO 358. - BAYO 358 The Dragunov SVD is a semi-automatic designated marksman rifle chambered in the fully-powered 7.62×54mmR cartridge, developed in the Soviet Union. The SVD was designed to serve a squad support role to provide precise long-range engagement capabilities to ordinary troops. The bayonet has an unfullered bowie type blade with an adaption for a pair of wire cutters paired with the scabbard. The aperture engages with the scabbard to form a pair of wire cutters. The orange composite grips are in very nice condition, the spring catch works as it should. The serrated blade is in good condition *small nicks to the sharp edge that will sharpen out*. The metal scabbard holds the majority of its original paint and comes with its original red lanyard. Blade length; 14 ¾ cm (28 cm overall). The bayonet is 71 ½ cm long with a blade length of 58 ¼ cm. The blade has minor signs of age related wear. The grips are made of chequered black leather held by steel pins. WWII Dated Australian 1907 Pattern Bayonet by Mangrovite Arsenal with Matching Scabbard. BAYO 356. - BAYO 356 An Australian 1907 Pattern bayonet with Mangrovite marked blade and later style No. 1 scabbard also marked ‘MA’. In around 1927 bayonet production ceased and was re-commenced late in 1940. Ricasso markings from 1940 are different, including the inspector's marks. The bayonet shop was transferred from Lithgow to Orange in July 1942. The wood room, which made up rifle furniture as well as bayonet grips, was removed from Lithgow to the Slazenger Sports Goods factory in Sydney in 1941. After Japans entry into the war in the Pacific, Australian bayonet development moved rapidly into newer, shorter and specialised patterns and so the long 1907 bayonets manufactured in WWII were short lived and consequently rare. The bayonet has a blackened 17" blade with fullers. The ricasso is stamped with inspection marks and ‘MA’ and on the other side with "1907 6 42" (June 1942). The blade is in excellent condition. The bayonet has a straight waisted cross guard. The slab wood grips are both intact and are secured with two screw bolts. The pommel has the push button release, which operates smoothly and clearance hole. The No 1 late scabbard has a large frog stud along with three rivets showing on the locket. It is leather and in good condition and is stamped "Mangrovite 43 (1943). (see page 276 & 277, item A10 in Skennerton's 'British & Commonwealth Bayonets book). The price includes UK delivery. Nazi M98 Dress Bayonet by Anton Wingen Jr, Solingen & Scabbard. BAYO 355. - BAYO 335 An early Nazi M98 dress bayonet and scabbard. The dress sidearm for military and civilian uniformed formations was designated the M98 Dress Bayonet. This bayonet represented a stylised form of the S. 84/98 bayonet purchased by the individual for wear with the walkout dress uniform and was worn by the mainly non-commissioned officers and enlisted personnel. This early dress bayonet has a rifle mortise and push button release. This is the long version with a 9 ¾ “blade which carries the makers logo of Anton Wingen Jr, Solingen. The polished steel blade is in very nice condition. The grips are chequered and secured with two screw bolts. It has a metal scabbard with leather frog with integrated belt loop. The metalwork and leather are in good condition, the number 7087 is stamped to the scabbard along with a Waffenamt stamp to the finial. (see 'German Clamshells' book pages 15-16 by Gary L. *Scarce* WWI German Model 1898/05 G98 Mauser 'Butcher Knife' Bayonet by Mauser A.G. Oberndorf Complete with Steel Scabbard. BAYO 353. - BAYO 353 This is a scarce version of the S98/05 saw back ‘Seitengewehr’ bayonet, made by Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorf a.n. and is marked to the blade with their name 8age related staining to the blade*. The‘Seitengewehr’ was issued to NCO’s of the foot artillery and it also replaced the 98/02 bayonet used by the Pioneers. The spine carries the crown over W 16 (1916 date of manufacture). The wooden grips are held with two pins and are very good order. These saw back versions are not common as they were made in smaller numbers initially, and most had their saw backs removed after Britain condemned them as barbarous. The scabbard is the steel version with frog stud and ball finial. This bayonet is in good condition. See pages 114 and 124 item No 270 of Watts & White ‘The Bayonet Book’ for similar.
