C1867 .32 Rim Fire Break Action Rook Rifle By E.C. Green, Cheltenham. A 578. - A 578
Edwin. C. Green was an English Gun maker who in 1867 had premises at 87 High Street, Cheltenham (see page 70 of English Gun makers By Baily & Nie). This is a good quality .32 Rim Fire Break Action Rook Rifle by Green. It has a 23" octagonal barrel and measures 38" overall. The barrel's bore has crisp rifling but does have some staining. The top of the barrel is engraved 'EC Green High Street, Cheltenham'. Both sides of the action, the hammer & trigger guard with extended tang are ornately engraved with a crisp deep foliate design. Both sides of the neck of the stock are inlaid with silver mounts and the underside of the stock inlaid with a silver shield shaped escutcheon nicely engraved with stylised initials possibly 'WSG'. The stock is also fitted with a steel butt plate. The stock which is all original has a beautiful grain and finely chequered neck *use related marks to the underside*. The weapon has fixed fore and rear sights and the loading, cocking & firing actions work perfectly. The price for this rare musket in excellent condition includes UK delivery. Ezekiel Baker & Son London Gun Makers to the King (Apprentice of Henry Nock & Inventor of the British Army Baker Rifle) which was adopted by the British government in 1800. The Baker company manufactured guns of quality. This is an original British Yeomanry Officer’s private purchase Enfield 1856 Pattern muzzle loading percussion rifle by Baker, London. The gun has all original walnut wood work in excellent condition with a, steel butt plate, fore end block and trigger guard with extended tang. The wood is numbered ‘106’. The rifle has its original steel ramrod, bayonet bar with a short forward extension, 1100 yard ladder rear sight, block & blade fore sight. The barrel’s 33 barrel is stamped with proof marks and the rifle measures 48 ½ inches ln length. Its rifled barrel is clean and bright. The cocking & firing actions work crisply. Richard Jackson son of another London gunmaker by the same name worked at Edgware Road London both on his own and with his brother Elias Jackson between 1847 & 1894 (see page 173 of British Gunmakers Vol.1 by Brown). This is an original British Yeomanry Officer’s private purchase Enfield Pattern muzzle loading percussion rifle by Richard Jackson. It has all original walnut wood work in excellent condition with chequered panels at the wrist and fore stock, steel butt plate, fore end block and trigger guard with extended tang. The wood is numbered ‘106’. The rifle has its original steel ramrod, bayonet bar, ladder rear sight, block & blade fore sight, sling swivels & nipple protector with brass chain. The barrel’s 31 ½” barrel is stamped with proof marks. Its bore is clean with crisp rifling. The cocking & firing actions work crisply. The action plate is signed ‘R. Jackson’ and the barrel ‘R. **EXTREMELY RARE** C1873 Russo-Turkish War American Peabody Martini Action Turkish Government Contract 11.3x59R (.45 Turkish) Obsolete Centre Fire Calibre Service Rifle. Sn 20023 - 20023
The Peabody & Peabody Martini variations were the development of Henry O. Peabody of Boston, Massachusetts. Commencing in 1873 the Turkish Government bought from the United States 600,000 Peabody Martini action Rifles and bayonets manufactured by the Providence Tool Company & the weapons saw service in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. On instruction from the Turkish Government who wanted the finest weapons to arm Ottoman Empire Forces, the weapons were identical to the Martini Henry action service rifles, apart from features such as Calibre size, butt plate design, sling swivel sizes and markings/ inspection marks. This is one of the Peabody Martini rifles purchased by the Turkish Government. The rifle in 11.3x59R calibre known in the USA as .45 Turkish calibre measures 49” overall with a 33” rifled barrel. The bore has light staining consistent with age and service use & crisp rifling. The rifle is fitted with sling swivels, block and blade fore sight, graduated ladder rear sight & correct chequered steel butt plate. The metalwork and woodwork are all original. The wood has light bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use. The weapon retains its original cleaning rod. The right side of the action has serial number in Turkish script and Crest, the left side of the action is crisply marked with the ‘Peabody Martini Patent’ & USA address (all illustrated). **QUALITY**Mid 1800's English Brinsley Nantwich (Cheshire) & Whitchurch (Shropshire) Patent 15 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting Shotgun. Sn 19752 - 19752
This is a quality made Victorian era 15 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting Shotgun. It has a 30” 2 stage barrel with bead fore sight and measures 47 ½”overall. The barrel's smooth bore is clean. The top of the barrel is signed ‘ Brinsley Nantwich & Whitchurch Patent’. The hammer, trigger guard with extended tang and butt plate tang are nicely engraved with foliate decoration. The action is signed by the maker ‘Brinsley’ (The only British gunmaker we can find named Brinsley is Joseph Brinsley C1846 recorded at Dixon’s yard. Pier Isle Of Man see page 179 of British Gunmakers Vol 2 by Brown) along with a hunting scene of game bird and hunting dog in the field. The wrist of the stock has fine chequering. The top of the wrist is inlaid with void escutcheon. The all original woodwork is excellent. The gun has a wood ram rod with brass end cap. The gun’s cocking and firing action works crisply. The action is dated 1859 & is marked ‘Tower’ (Enfield) together with Victorian Queen’s Crown. It has all original woodwork with steel butt plate, sling swivels, trigger guard, bayonet lug, fore end cap together with ramrod. 1849 British WD Enfield Tower.702 Calibre Muzzle Loading, Percussion Rifled Carbine Stock Impressed ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. Sn 19164 - 19164
The London based Barnett family of Gunsmiths are recorded at various addresses in London from 1796 to 1908 starting with Thomas Barnett at 134 Minories who later became Thomas Barnett & Sons and later John Edward Barnett at the Minories & 37 Camomile Street, ending as JE Barnett & Sons Ltd at Brewhouse Lane, Leaman Street & Duncan Street (see page 140 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol.1). This is an original British 1849 Enfield Tower made Carbine with stock marked by Barnett. It has excellent all original wood stock and original finish to the metal work. The wood is crisply impressed with ‘WD & Broad Arrow’ and most likely the stock maker’s cartouche ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the action plate is crisply stamped ‘Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & ‘Tower’ (Enfield) ‘1849’. Its 24" barrel (40” overall) is rifled and has just light staining consistent with age and use. The barrel has proofs. It has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight and block & blade fore sight. It has iron ramrod and sling swivels. The carbine also has brass fore end block, trigger guard, ram rod flutes & butt plate. The carbine cocks & dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery. The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle was a .577 calibre Minié-type muzzle-loading rifled musket, used by the British Empire from 1853 to 1867; after which many were replaced in service by the cartridge-loaded Snider–Enfield rifle. This 3 band muzzle loading P1853 Enfield has been contemporarily converted to the breech loading snider system. The rifle has no maker, date or inspection marks. It has all original walnut stock which has bumps and bruises to be expected, brass butt plate, trigger guard, fore end block & steel cleaning rod. The rifle has its original block and blade fore sight and flip up graduated ladder rear sight. Its sling swivels are fitted with buff leather sling. This Victorian Lowe Chester 13 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Single Barrel Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun has a 32 ½” long steel barrel & measures 48 ½” overall. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. It has a shallow grooved action rear sight. The gun has an undamaged walnut stock with German Silver fore end cap. The wrist has an inlaid silver escutcheon with engraved stylised monogram. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang, trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial & steel hammer. The metal work has areas of foliate engraved decoration.
