1887 Enfield WD MK IV Martini Henry .577 x.450 Long Lever Service Rifle; Re- issued 1908 after service to British Army in India & 1 x Inert Deactivated Round. Sn 20855 - 20855
This is an excellent, original British WD MK IV 1887 dated .577x .450 Martini Henry, long lever service rifle (see Chapter 13 of The Martini Henry For Queen & Empire by Aspinshaw). It has its original woodwork throughout. The wood has just light bumps and bruises consistent with age and service use. The wood has later 1908 Indian / Nepalese Government (Rau Pindi) RP Marks indicating Native troops use after British service.. It has a block & blade fore sight, flip up graduated ladder rear sight, steel butt plate, sling swivels, steel cleaning rod & bayonet lug. The 32 ½” steel barrel’s bore is clean with crisp rifling (49 ½” overall). The barrel has WD inspection / proof marks. The metal work has even patina. The action works crisply. The action is stamped on the right side Crown VR (Victoria Regina) Enfield, ‘Mark IV I/2’ model designation and dated '1887'. A WD arrow is on the cocking indicator. James Dalzeil Dougall (1818-91) of the Scottish Glasgow based family of Gun & Fowling tackle makers expanded to work in London at 59 St James Street 1864-82. The company became Dougall & Sons in 1883 and continued in business both in London and Glasgow until C1923 (see pages 154 and 155 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). This is an original British Officer’s private purchase Enfield 1853 Pattern 3-band Percussion Rifle in .577 regulation calibre By J.D. Dougall London made C1865. The action plate is signed ‘J.D Dougall’. It has all original walnut stock with chequered panel wrist and fore stock, brass butt plate, brass fore end block and trigger guard with extended tang. The rifle also has its original iron ramrod, ladder rear sight & block and blade fore sight. It has a heavy military hammer. The barrel’s bore is has just light staining consistent with age & well defined rifling. The barrel is stamped with proof / inspection marks. The metal work has even patina. Total length is 49 ½” with a 33" barrel. The barrel is signed with the maker’s 59 St james Street address. The cocking & firing action work crisply. The price includes UK delivery. The British Bowker family settled in the South African Eastern Cape in 1820. Octavius Bourchier Bowker worked in Queens Town. He was an exceptionally good marksman. He served in the 6th, 7th and 8th Frontier Wars. He was a gunsmith and developed the sought-after Bowker Gun. He participated in Boer operations against the Basuto tribe in the Free State, where his skill as a marksman was valued. This is an excellent, quality made Double barrel percussion Cape rifle made C1850 by Octavius Bowker. It has 29 ¼” Damascus steel barrels and measures 47 ½” overall. The barrels, set side by side have a central flat top barrel rib which has graduated markings, fixed open fore sight and graduated 3 leaf rear sights with silvered aiming lines. The barrel rib is signed ‘Octavius Bowker Queen’s Town No. 603’. The number is repeated on the trigger guard tang. The rifle barrel is .550 calibre and the shotgun barrel is 13 Bore. Both bores are near mint clean and bright and the rifle barrel has well defined rifling. It has its original walnut stock with chequered panels at the fore stock and wrist. One side It has a steel butt plate with extended tang and trigger guard with extended tang. The top of one side of the forestock is missing a thin sliver of wood, only visible on close inspection and the fore stock is totally secure. The stock has a hinged trap. The steel lid of the trap is engraved with ‘Stag’ in the field scene. The metal work has nice tooled foliate decoration to the action plates, breach tang, Dolphin hammers, trigger guard and butt plate tang. Both action plates are signed ‘O. Bowker’. It has double triggers and the weapon cocks & dry fires crisply. The weapon has sling swivel lugs & has its brass tipped and capped ebonised wood ramrod. The brass tip unscrews to reveal a worm. The underside of the stock has a void white metal escutcheon. The price for this quality double combination Cape rifle includes UK delivery. Its steel action plate is signed by the retailer Thomas Turner, Fisher Street, Birmingham. The breech has a proof / inspection marks and partially visible Snider patent mark. This is a quality private purchase .577 Calibre Snider, 3 Band Enfield Rifle retailed by John Horsley of York. The gun has all original walnut woodwork throughout and the steel action plate is signed by the retailer John Horsley of York. The rifle has a brass butt plate, trigger guard & fore end block. The rifle has the anti-snag Baddeley bands and the correct square section head cleaning rod adopted on later Snider rifles. The gun is complete with both sling swivels, cleaning rod, block and blade fore sight, 950 yard ramp and ladder rear sight & heavy military hammer. The breech and barrel have Birmingham proof / inspection marks for 25 bore which is .577 calibre. The breech and barrel also carry the snider logo, the breech block stamped on the top SNIDER PATENT. The rifle measures 55” overall with a 36 ½” barrel. The rifle retains much of its blued finish with a bore is near mint condition with crisp well defined rifling. This is a Victorian 18 bore percussion double barrel shotgun in English form made C1850. It has 30” steel barrels and measures 46” overall length. The all original walnut stock has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use . The wrist has a chequered grip panel and the underside of the shoulder stock has an inlaid white metal escutcheon. The barrel’s smooth bores have staining and residue consistent with age and use. The barrel rib has a brass bead fore sight. There are no maker or date marks externally visible. The tip of one nipple is absent but the cocking & firing actions of the weapon work crisply. The gun has an ebonised wood ram rod with brass end cap and brass tip. This shotgun is suitable for display only and would make an attractive wall hanger. The Turkish Model 1887 rifle was the first of a series of rifles produced for the Turkish Army by Mauser of Germany. Its design echoed that of the German Gewehr 71/84 service rifle, being a bolt-action weapon with a tubular magazine beneath the barrel. These weapons saw service in the Mesopotamia theatre of war and Gallipoli during WW1. This is an excellent original WW1 Turkish Model 1887 service rifle, possibly a WW1 bring back from Mesopotamia / Gallipoli. It has all original wood which has just knocks bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use. It is fitted with sling swivels & bayonet lug. It has a steel butt plate, adjustable graduated ladder rear sight (sight slide absent) and block & blade fore sight. The breech is crisply marked with Turkish script together with crescent moon marks (illustrated). It has a 29” barrel and measures 49 ½” overall. **RARE**American Civil War Era, Early Serial Number, Frank Wesson USA, 1859-1862 Patent 2nd Type .32 Rim Fire Obsolete Calibre Break Action Breech Loading Double Trigger Carbine. Sn 20692 - 20692
Frank Wesson rifles were a series of single-shot rifles manufactured between 1859 and 1888 in Worcester, Massachusetts. They were purchased by many state governments during the American Civil War, including Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio. They were one of the first rifles to use rimfire metallic cartridges. The rifles were initially made in .22, .32, .38, and .44 rimfire. Centerfire cartridges were added later, and some rifles were capable of firing rimfire or centerfire cartridges, by altering an adjustment on the hammer. By 1859, there were a number of single-shot breech-loading rifles available to the American military and public. These included the Sharps rifle (1848), the Smith carbine (1857) and others. On all 'two-trigger' Frank Wesson models, the front trigger opened the rifle at half cock, the rear trigger fired it. 1st type Frank Wesson carbines were made between 1859-1864 and had no extractor until later 1st types which had an extractor on the left side of the action. 2nd Type Frank Wessons such as ours had the extractor moved to the right side of the action and were made 1863-1876. Our 2nd type Frank Wesson carbine is in excellent. The weapon is 39 ¼” overall length. The weapon has a 23 ¾” long, octagonal barrel. The barrel’s bore is clean with typical light rifling. The metal work is clean. It has a block & blade foresight, ‘u’ block rear sight and correct additional folding aperture peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped ‘Frank Wesson Worcester Mass Pat’d Oct 25 1859 Nov 11 1862’. The trigger guard tang has early serial number ‘191’. The all original Walnut shoulder stock has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use. The butt plate is steel. The loading and firing actions work crisply. **OUTSTANDING**Remington USA 1869-1893 Spanish Military Contract Rolling Block .43 Spanish (11mm) Obsolete Centre Fire Calibre Infantry Rifle With 1 x Inert Deactivated Round Of .43 Spanish Calibre Ammunition. Sn 20734 - 20734
An outstanding condition Remington USA Spanish military contract 'Rolling Block' infantry rifle in .43 Spanish (11mm) Obsolete Centre Fire Calibre. The Remington Rolling Block rifle was a breech-loading rifle produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). The action was extremely strong, and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s. In .43 Spanish (11mm) UK obsolete calibre it was the chief service arm of the Spanish Army from 1869–1893, and was used by reserve and militia forces for many years thereafter. This Spanish Military contract has a 34 ½” barrel (50 ½” overall). The barrel shank is stamped ‘FB’ above ‘R’. The barrel's rifled bore has just light staining consistent with age and use and well defined rifling. The rifle has an external hammer, cleaning rod, sling swivels, block and blade fore sight and ladder rear sight. The all original woodwork and metal work in excellent condition and the metal has excellent blue finish. The action tang has Remington’s patents (illustrated). It's loading and firing actions work crisply. The rifle is accompanied by 1 x inert deactivated brass cased round of .43 Spanish calibre ammunition. **RARE**Austrian Lorenz Model 1854/66 14mm Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Lorenz Jagerstutzen (Sharpshooter’s) Carbine 1866 Converted To 11x58R Cartridge Werndl Breech Loading. Sn 20731 - 20731
The Austrian Lorenz rifle and carbines were used in the mid 19th century. They were used in the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859 and the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, and also featured prominently in the American Civil War. The Lorenz rifle was designed by Austrian lieutenant Joseph Lorenz. It was first approved for manufacture in 1854, and was Austria's first all-new infantry firearm since 1842. Replacing the earlier Augustin musket, the Lorenz was first distributed to Austrian soldiers in 1855. In 1866 some of the rifles and carbines were converted to Werndl breech loading weapons. Our Austrian Model 1854/66 Muzzle Loading Percussion Lorenz Jagerstutzen (Sharpshooter’s) Carbine Was Converted To Werndl Breech Loading in 1866 and is in excellent condition. It has all original metal work in the white and Beech stock with Figured cheek piece. The wood and metal work are excellent. The wood is impressed with inspection marks illustrated. It is fitted with clearing rod, sling swivels, graduated sliding bar rear sight, block and blade foresight, bayonet lug and steel butt plate. The heel of the butt plate has indistinct regiment marks. The barrel is stamped ‘LW 11129’ and the metal has other numbers and marks (illustrated). The carbine’s 24½” 2 stage barrel has well defined rifling and just light staining consistent with age and use. It measures 43 ½”overall. It's loading and firing actions work crisply. These Jagerstutzen carbines were designed to take a specific sword bayonet only designed for these weapons, The Lorenz Jager carbine Bayonet with Helical Slot (see page 13 item 19 and page 8 of The Bayonet book by Watts & White).
