1831 French Model 1822 Challerault Cavalry Pistol Converted from Flintlock to Percussion. A 585. - A 585
An original French Model 1822 Challerault Cavalry pistol converted from flintlock to percussion with a rifled barrel. The pistol has a dark wood stock which has regimental marks stamped into it "122 449 G". The woodwork is excellent. The lock plate is stamped with "Mre Rle de Culle". The barrel is date stamped with "1831" and "M.R." on the right hand side and "C de 17, 6A C.C." on the left hand side. The pistol retains the original ramrod / powder measure which is stamped "3387". The pistol's foresight and backsight are original and undamaged. The pistol cocks and dry fires with a strong action.. The brass furniture is all original with a good patina and all have the French proof marks stamped inside an oval. The pistol butt has a steel lanyard ring attached to it. This is a fine example of this pistol, substantial and well made. The price includes UK delivery. English Late 18th / Early 19th Century ‘Segary’ 16 Bore Flintlock Holster Pistol. Sn 14657. - 14657
This is a very good English form flintlock holster pistol made sometime in the late 18th / early 19th Century. It has a 9” round steel barrel. The barrel is 16.71mm muzzle diameter (approx. 16 bore). The smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The barrel has crown V and crown P proofs (illustrated). It has a swan neck hammer, and brass furniture including butt plate, trigger guard with extended tang and ram rod mount. The lock plate is signed ‘Segray’. The walnut stock full stock is undamaged. An original cup primed Teat fire revolver by Merwin & Bray Firearms Co New York period converted to rim fire . It has a 3 ½” octagonal barrel with top rib which is marked “Merwin & Bray Firearms Co NY”. “Merwin & Bray New York” is repeated on another barrel flat. It has an undamaged brass frame stamped “1427” which is repeated on the underside of the barrel. The barrel’s bore has just light staining and crisp rifling. The front sight is a half round German silver blade. It has a grooved frame rear sight. Originally as a teat fire revolver it would have had a captive ejector rod mounted on the side of the frame to eject the front loaded teat fire cartridges, the ejector rod has been removed as part of the conversion to rim fire and the cylinder which would have been sealed at the breech end, replaced with open cylinders for rim fire cartridges. The grips are smooth varnished rosewood which have just the bumps and bruises to be expected with age. The barrel, removable cylinder and hammer retain some of their original blue finish. The pistol is single action only. The price includes UK delivery. 1823-1840 American 50 Bore, Brass Flintlock Pocket Pistol With Turn Off Barrel & English Birmingham Black Powder Proofs. Sn 19769 - 19769
According to "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitter, pages 304 and 305, John P. Moore operated a gun shop in New York City America between 1823 and 1840. This is a brass Flintlock pocket pistol by J.P Moore. It is 6 ¾” overall with a 2" turn off brass barrel. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The brass frame is engraved on both sides with martial banners & arms. Within the panels are the maker’s name ‘J.P Moore’ on one side and ‘New York’ on the reverse. Interestingly the underside of the action has English Birmingham black powder proofs (internet research reveals that other forms of pistol of that period, including military form martial pieces by Moore of New York carry British proofs). It has a steel hammer, steel trigger & trigger guard. The pistol has an undamaged bag shaped slab walnut grip. The pistol cocks and dry fires crisply. This a good English percussion pocket pistol made C1840. It is 6 ½”overall with a 2 ¼” screw off barrel (a tool is required to turn off the barrel, we do not have the tool). The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. The action and barrel have crisp English proofs. Its action is decorated on both sides with foliate panels. There is no visible makers name. It has its original bag shaped wood grip. The back of the grip is inlaid with void white metal escutcheon. The trigger guard is decorated with a stylised star motif. C1840 Durs Egg London 18 Bore Percussion Traveling Pistol With Octagonal Steel Barrel, Walnut Full Stock & Captive Steel Ram Rod. Sn 19213 - 19213
Durs Egg (1748–1831) was a Swiss-born British gunmaker, noted for his quality pistols and for his company's production of the Ferguson rifle. Egg was apprenticed in Solothurn and Paris before establishing his own business in London in 1772. He was a contemporary of Joseph Manton, Jean Samuel Pauly and the uncle of Joseph Egg. When the famous gunsmith Durs Egg died in 1831 his Son John Egg took over the business operating at Haymarket London. In 1839 The business name reverted to Durs Egg at 4 Pall Mall London until 1854 then at 4 Colonnade Pall Mall from 1855 to 1865. This is a quality percussion traveling pistol by Durs Egg. The pistol has quality hand tooled decoration on the action plate, hammer, trigger guard with pineapple finial and action tang. The pistol measures 11" overall & has a 6” octagonal steel barrel with brass bead fore sight. The top barrel flat is signed ‘D.Egg London’. The smooth bore is clean. The original walnut full stock has chequered panels at the grip. The top of the stock is inlaid with void German Silver escutcheon. The pistol has a captive steel ram rod. C1800 English Patrick Liverpool 18 Bore Flintlock Holster Pistol Nipple & Drum Converted To Percussion C1830. Sn 18994 / 19533 - 18994 / 19533
Jeremiah Patrick was an English Liverpool based Gunsmith between 1795-1814. The business was then taken on by Edward Patrick between 1814-1820 & finally by Ann Patrick into the mid 1800’s. This is a flintlock holster made C1800 by Patrick of Liverpool and later, C1830 nipple & drum converted to percussion. It measures 15 ¼” overall and has a 9” 2 stage un-sighted barrel. The barrel has proofs. The smooth bore has just light staining consistent with age. The top of the barrel is very faintly engraved ‘Liverpool' (to faint to photograph). It has a brass trigger guard with extended tang & brass ram rod flutes. The border engraved stepped lock plate is signed 'Patrick'. It has a dark walnut full stock with brass cudgel butt. The top of the stock’s wrist is inlaid with a brass shield engraved with stylised monogram. The pistol has a brass topped wooden ramrod with worm and screw off brass cap. This is a C1815 English Clark London 32 Bore Flintlock Overcoat Travelling Pistol. It has a 4” 32 Bore barrel with sighted rib engraved ‘LONDON’, border engraved stepped and bolted signed lock ‘CLARK’ (most likely John Clark gunmaker Chamber Street London 1814-1820 see page 149 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol 1). The pistol is full stocked with border engraved steel mounts, chequered grip, white metal escutcheon with engraved name ‘J.Lloyd’ no doubt the original owner & horn topped wooden ramrod. 1807-1821 English Dunderdale, Mabson & Labron, Birmingham 54 Bore Flintlock Pocket Pistol With Turn Off Barrel. Sn 18907 - 18907
This an excellent Flintlock pocket pistol made By Dunderdale, Mabson & Labron who were quality English Gun makers located at 25 Russell Street, Birmingham between 1807-1821 (see page 35 of English Gunmakers By Bailey & Nie). It is 6 ½” overall with a 1 ¾” screw off barrel. A tool is required to turn off the barrel, we do not have the tool. The barrel’s bore is clean. The underside of the action has crisp proof marks. It's steel action is decorated with Martial banners on the right side and with the manufacturer's name 'Dunderdale, Mabson & Labron' on the left. It has undamaged original bag shaped wood grip. The back of the grip has an inlaid silver shield escutcheon with stylised monogram. The hammer is fitted with a flint. The weapon cocks and dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery. The Manton family were English gunmakers beginning with John in the early 1800's, then his younger brother Joseph who operated circa 1825-35. J. Manton and Son operated circa 1832-1862 and J. Manton & Co is later listed as operating in London and Calcutta. This is an excellent percussion holster pistol by Manton & Co London & Calcutta. It has an 8” round steel barrel. The barrel is large calibre .750 Musket calibre. The smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age & use. The barrel has English black powder proofs. The pistol has heavy brass furniture including cudgel butt and it has a captive steel ram rod. The action plate is signed ‘Manton & Co London & Calcutta’.
