Victorian ‘East India Company’ Combination Tool for Percussion Rifles and Muskets. A 1096. - A 1096
A rare percussion era combination tool for the Enfield rifle used by the East India Company. The East India Company (EIC) was English, and later British, joint-stock company founded in 1600. It was formed to trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with the East Indies (the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia), and later with Qing China. The company seized control of large parts of the Indian subcontinent, colonised parts of Southeast Asia and Hong Kong after the First Opium War, and maintained trading posts and colonies in the Persian Gulf Residencies This tool incorporates a nipple pick and nipple wrench, two screwdrivers, one of which is “scooped” so that it may be used on the typical East India Company pattern ‘bun nut’. The third arm is threaded and probably held a worm or wiper, now missing. The price includes UK postage. A 1096.

The five functions are distributed among four components: cock jaw wrench and drift; small screwdriver; large shouldered screwdriver; and priming pan scraper. The pan scraper is hinged at the centre of the other three tools, which are arranged in a triangular configuration. Very good condition and an excellent collector’s item. Price includes UK postage. Victorian French Long Gun Size Polished Flattened Cow Horn Black Powder Flask With Graduated Brass Charger & Hanging Rings Fitted With Copper Chain. Sn 18593 - 18593
This is an excellent, original, complete, French form , Victorian, Black Powder Flask for pistols . It is similar in form to chargers illustrated on page 395 item 1168-2 of the Powder Flask Book by Riling. It measures 9” overall length and the polished, flattened horn flask and the flat brass base secured by pins is 1 ¼” x 3” . The horn is clean and has nice colour. It has a brass throat cap with sprung brass opening lever. There are no visible manufacturer marks on the flask. The sprung lever charger is graduated ’65-70-75-80’ grains. The horn is fitted with 2 small brass rings mounted with copper chain. The price for this attractive gun size flask includes UK delivery. Sn 18593

19th Century British James Dixon & Sons Sheffield Plain Category Copper & Brass Black Powder Flask With Graduated Sprung Nozzle Charger. Sn 18596 - 18596
Decoration of powder flasks varied dramatically with plain utilitarian examples and ornate examples with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes & were made of a wide variety of materials. This flask falls into the ‘Plain category’ described in the ‘Plain Flasks’ chapter (page 271) of, ‘The Powder Flask’ book by Riling. Similar small copper and brass plain flasks by Dixon & Sons are illustrated in that chapter. Riling states that these plain flasks “should receive special attention from the new collector and form an important part of any collection”. This flask measures 6” overall length and is 2 ¾” at its widest. The brass sprung charger works correctly and has a removable screw in nozzle. The charger bears the James Dixon & Sons Sheffield name & is graduated 1 ½, 1 ¾, 2 Drams. The copper body is has no dents. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 18596

19th Century British Sykes Sheffield Pocket Pistol Size Plain Category Copper & Brass Black Powder Flask With Sprung Nozzle Charger. Sn 18592 - 18592
Decoration of powder flasks varied dramatically with plain utilitarian examples and ornate examples with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes & were made of a wide variety of materials. This tiny pocket pistol size flask falls into the ‘Plain category’ described in the ‘Plain Flasks’ chapter (page 271) of, ‘The Powder Flask’ book by Riling. Similar small copper and brass plain flasks are illustrated at plates 110 & 112 of Rilings book page 274 along with other forms from the period Sykes catalogue. Riling states that these plain flasks “should receive special attention from the new collector and form an important part of any collection”. This tiny flask measures 3 ¼” overall length and is 1 ¼” at its widest. The brass sprung charger works correctly and has a removable screw in nozzle. The copper body is faintly stamped by the manufacturer ‘Sykes’. The copper has a few minor dents but no cracks or splits. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 18592

Decoration of 19th Century powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes together with a variety of material coverings. This quality flask falls into the Foliage category (see page 323 of the Chapter ‘Foliage’ of the powder flask book by Riling and plate 660-2 of the same page where a flask with similar pineapple and foliage design to ours is illustrated). This is an excellent, gun size, black powder flask. Its copper body is deeply embossed with attractive Pineapple and foliate decoration. There are no signs of damage or repair. The screw top brass charger is graduated (no dram measurements are visible) and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. There are no visible manufacturer marks. 19th Century Gun Size G & J.W. Hawksley Sheffield Black Powder Flask With Fine Wicker Basket Weave Covering, Graduated, Sprung Nozzle Charger. Sn 18599 - 18599
The Sheffield based company Geo & JW Hawksley are recorded at 35 Smithfield 1845 and various addresses on Carver Street Sheffield from 1854 through to the 1940’s when the Company was bought by James Dixon & Sons (see page 114 of Riling’s book The Powder Flask). Decoration of powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes. They were also made of a wide variety of materials and had various coverings. A Flask similar to ours with fine wicker basket weave covering is illustrated from a period James Dixon & Sons Sheffield on page 213 panel 10 of The powder flask book by Riling. This gun size, black powder flask by C &JW Hawksley is made of brass with wicker basket weave covering all clean and intact. The screw top charger has measurement adjustment ‘2 ½, 2 ¾, 3’ drams and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. The charger is crisply marked ‘G & J.W. Hawksley Sheffield’. Early 1800’s Gun Size James Dixon & Sons Sheffield Quick Loading Fireproof Leather Covered Iron Black Powder Flask With Graduated, German Silver Sprung Brass Nozzle Charger. Sn 17987 - 17987
Hunting accessories were added to the British Gunmaker James Dixon & Sons Sheffield production line in the 1830s. This included powder and shot flasks in copper and brass, leather shot pouches and hunting belts. Other sporting goods such as wine and spirit flasks, as well as sandwich and cheese boxes, proved to be very popular with consumers. The line continued to expand as firearm technology progressed. A complete catalogue of Dixon's hunting accessories was produced in 1876. Dixon's continued to make these items well into the 1900s. Decoration of 19th century powder flasks varied dramatically with hunting, game animals, foliate, village, military and marine scenes together with a variety of material coverings. This quality flask falls into the Leather covered category (see page 388, the Chapter ‘Leather & Leather Covered’ of the powder flask book by Riling). This is an excellent, gun size, black powder flask by James Dixon & Sons Sheffield. It’s iron body is leather covered with stitched seam. The screw top German Silver charger has measurement adjustment ‘ 2 ½ , 2 ¾, 3, 3 ¼ drams’ and spring lever which is fully functioning with a strong action. The charger is crisply marked ‘James Dixon & Sons Sheffield’ and ‘Quick Loading Fireproof’. The flask is 8 ¼” length and 3 ½” diameter at its widest. The body has no dents. There are no cracks, damage or signs of repair and the leather covering & stitching all clean and intact. The leather has just a few areas of surface scuffs to be expected.
