**MINT BORE**Victorian British Volunteer/ Militia Officer’s Private Purchase Thomas Turner, Birmingham Snider Patent MK III .577 Obsolete Calibre 3 Band Rifle. Sn 20783:5 - 20783:5 This is a private purchase .577 Calibre Snider, MK III 3 Band Rifle retailed by Thomas Turner Birmingham. It has all original Walnut woodwork and metal throughout. Its steel action plate is signed by the retailer Thomas Turner, Fisher Street, Birmingham. The breech has a proof / inspection marks and partially visible Snider patent mark. It has a brass butt plate, trigger guard & fore end block. The rifle measures 55” overall with a 36 ½” barrel. The barrel’s bore is near mint, clean with crisp well defined rifling. The barrel is signed ‘T. Turner’ and the wood has Turner’s trademark roundel (all illustrated). The hinged breech has the correct MK III knurled locking catch. The rifle is complete with sling swivels, ram rod, block, block and blade fore sight, ladder rear sight & heavy military hammer. Its cocking and firing actions work crisply. C1840’s, Cased Pair Of Irish Trulock & Son Dublin 38 Bore Percussion Traveling Pistols Stocks Numbered ‘1516’ & Barrels With C-N 7033 / 7034 County Cavan Irish Registration Marks & Original Accessories. Sn 19979 - 19979 The Irish Gunmakers Trulock & Son are recorded as having premises at 9 Dawson Street, Dublin in the early to Mid 1800’s. This is an excellent pair of percussion pistols by Trulock & Son. The pistols have quality all original walnut full stocks with chequered grip panels and inlaid void escutcheons on top of their wrists. The butt of each pistol are numbered ‘1516’. They have 3 ½” steel barrels with flat tops and blade fore sights (7 ½” overall). They have foliate decorated trigger guards with extended tangs and pineapple finials, barrel tangs, Dolphin hammers. The action plates of each pistol have foliate engraved decoration & are crisply signed by the manufacturer ‘Trulock & Son’. The top of each barrel crisply are signed ‘Trulock & Son Dublin’. The barrels have Irish Registration marks, one C-N 7033 the other C-N 7034 which is County Cavan (the Irish Registration Act was passed in 1843 and lasted only a short while, until August 1846. There were 39 districts (34 counties, 4 boroughs and Dublin City) each with its own two letter prefix followed by a number. Cavan’s prefix was C-N). Both pistols have their original captive steel ram rods. The barrels of each pistol are smoothbore. The bores are clean. Their cocking & firing actions work as they should. The pistols are complete with their fitted wood case. The case with hinged lid has its original lock & key. The interior of the case is lined in felt and has compartments contoured to snugly fit the pistols and their accessories which include a copper and brass powder flask, a moulded ball with cloth patch, a steel bullet mould numbered 34, a wooden pot with removable lid, a wood handled tool and a wood cleaning rod with brass tip. Cased, Victorian British Officer’s Reilly London Adams Patent 38 Calibre 5 Shot Double Action Percussion Revolver To Lieut General Julian Hamilton Hall Coldstream Guards (Saw Action In The Crimean War) With Accessories. Sn 18756. - 18756 Born the son of Sir John Hall, 5th Baronet, Julian Hamilton Hall (1837-1911) was commissioned as an ensign in the Coldstream Guards on 2 August 1854. He saw action in the Crimean War. He became commanding officer of the Cheshire Regiment in May 1883 before moving on to be Assistant-Adjutant and Quartermaster-General at Headquarters Home District in December 1884 and General Officer Commanding North Western District in April 1890; he retired in April 1895 (an A4 size printout from Internet resources containing the above antecedents accompanies the pistol). Robert Adams was shop manager for George and John Deane of 30 King William St., London Bridge, and designed the revolver came to be known as the Deane Adams Deane model. Adams split with the Deane firm in 1856. The Deane firm remained at 30 King William St. and became "Dean and son". Until the arrival of Samuel Colt at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with his display of percussion revolvers, British gun makers had largely neglected this style of weapon except for pepperbox revolvers. The arrival of Colt with his American methods of promoting business caused much resentment in the British gun trade. The outcome was a surge in quality revolver design and production by British makers including Deane Adams & Deane & Deane & Son & other British Gunmakers. These British revolvers were popular private purchase items for British officers. This is an excellent, original, cased, Reilly London Adams patent 5 shot percussion revolver. The weapon's firing mechanism works as it should, correctly, in double action only. It has a 4 ½” octagonal barrel (9 ¾” overall). The rifled bore is clean. The barrel has a blade fore sight & notched plate on the frame rear sight. The top of the frame is signed ‘Reilly New Oxford Street London’. It has foliate engraving to the frame & trigger guard. The frame is engraved ‘Adams Patent’ ‘No.201208Y’ and ‘Julian Hall Coldstrm Gds’ indicating that this revolver was bought by the Officer for his Crimea War service. The barrel & cylinder have English black powder proofs. Its finely chequered walnut grip is in excellent undamaged condition and it has a steel butt plate. The pistol's metal work is undamaged with original blue finish which has even patina. The pistol is contained in its original Mahogany case with hinged lid. The top of the lid is inlaid with a void central brass roundel. The case has a brass lock (key absent). The case is lined with green felt and has a nice Reilly Gunmaker London trade label with New Oxford Street address. The case has compartments which contain accessories including a white metal oil tin with screw top lid and integral oil applicator, a steel tool with wood handle, a quantity of moulded lead balls, an ebony handled cleaning rod with brass tip, a copper & brass powder flask with sprung nozzle & an empty F.Joyce London labelled percussion cap tin. MINT BORE, Victorian British Volunteer/ Militia Private Purchase John Horsley of York .577 Snider Obsolete Calibre 3 Band Enfield Rifle. Sn - 20785 This is a quality private purchase .577 Calibre Snider, 3 Band Enfield Rifle retailed by John Horsley of York. The gun has all original walnut woodwork throughout and the steel action plate is signed by the retailer John Horsley of York. The rifle has a brass butt plate, trigger guard & fore end block. The rifle has the anti-snag Baddeley bands and the correct square section head cleaning rod adopted on later Snider rifles. The gun is complete with both sling swivels, cleaning rod, block and blade fore sight, 950 yard ramp and ladder rear sight & heavy military hammer. The breech and barrel have Birmingham proof / inspection marks for 25 bore which is .577 calibre. The breech and barrel also carry the snider logo, the breech block stamped on the top SNIDER PATENT. The rifle measures 55” overall with a 36 ½” barrel. The rifle retains much of its blued finish with a bore is near mint condition with crisp well defined rifling. **RARE**Austrian Lorenz Model 1854/66 14mm Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Lorenz Jagerstutzen (Sharpshooter’s) Carbine 1866 Converted To 11x58R Cartridge Werndl Breech Loading. Sn 20731 - 20731 The Austrian Lorenz rifle and carbines were used in the mid 19th century. They were used in the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859 and the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, and also featured prominently in the American Civil War. The Lorenz rifle was designed by Austrian lieutenant Joseph Lorenz. It was first approved for manufacture in 1854, and was Austria's first all-new infantry firearm since 1842. Replacing the earlier Augustin musket, the Lorenz was first distributed to Austrian soldiers in 1855. In 1866 some of the rifles and carbines were converted to Werndl breech loading weapons. Our Austrian Model 1854/66 Muzzle Loading Percussion Lorenz Jagerstutzen (Sharpshooter’s) Carbine Was Converted To Werndl Breech Loading in 1866 and is in excellent condition. It has all original metal work in the white and Beech stock with Figured cheek piece. The wood and metal work are excellent. The wood is impressed with inspection marks illustrated. It is fitted with clearing rod, sling swivels, graduated sliding bar rear sight, block and blade foresight, bayonet lug and steel butt plate. The heel of the butt plate has indistinct regiment marks. The barrel is stamped ‘LW 11129’ and the metal has other numbers and marks (illustrated). The carbine’s 24½” 2 stage barrel has well defined rifling and just light staining consistent with age and use. It measures 43 ½”overall. It's loading and firing actions work crisply. These Jagerstutzen carbines were designed to take a specific sword bayonet only designed for these weapons, The Lorenz Jager carbine Bayonet with Helical Slot (see page 13 item 19 and page 8 of The Bayonet book by Watts & White). **1855 CRIMEA WAR ERA**MATCHING NUMBERS**British Colt London Navy Model 1851 .36 Calibre Cap & Ball Revolver. Sn 20709:21 - 20709:21 The Colt Model 1851 Navy was a muzzle-loading, single action, cap & ball .36 calibre revolver used during the American Civil War. It was used as a side arm by Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery troops, and Naval forces. The weapons were also favoured by British Officer’s during the Crimean War due to their innovative design and ease of loading. During the Crimea War, The British Government ordered 9,000 Colt revolvers. This Colt London Model 1851 Navy revolver is in superb original condition. The pistol has a 7 ½” octagonal steel barrel and measures 13 ½” overall. The barrel’s bore is clean with well defined rifling. The metal work has areas of age and service use related pitting. The weapon has a brass post foresight and 'notched hammer' rear sight. It has a captive 'lever' ramrod. The barrel is crisply stamped with manufacturer detail 'Address Col. Colt London'. The cylinder has British Victorian ‘Crown V’ and ‘Crown P’ proof marks and It has all matching serial numbers '19536' on the barrel block, frame, trigger guard, butt strap & cylinder which dates its manufacturer to 1855 during the Crimea war (1853-1856). Victorian British Hollis & Sheath Birmingham Makers To Her Majesty’s War Department Enfield Volunteer’s Private Purchase, 2 Band .577 Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion 2 Band Rifle With 3 Groove Rifling. Sn 20647 - 20647 Hollis & Sheath were English, Birmingham based Gunmakers with premises at Weaman Row & 49 Whittall Street between 1849 to 1861 when the Business succeeded to Isaac Hollis & Sons (see page 251 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). Hollis & Sheath also made military weapons for the British Board Of Ordnance. This is an excellent, original British Volunteer’s private purchase 2-band Percussion Rifle in .577" calibre. The action plate is faintly signed signed ‘Hollis & Sheath Makers To Her Majesty’s War Department’. It has all original walnut stock with steel butt plate, steel fore end block, bayonet bar & trigger guard with extended tang. The rifle also has its original steel ramrod, block with blade fore sight none standard graduated ladder rear sight with copper aiming ladder band (illustrated in image 3).The barrel’s bore has just light staining & residue consistent with age and use & its 3 band rifling is well defined. **RARE**MINT BORE**C1900 British Military A&N CSLtd London (Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Ltd) Martini Action .297/230 Obsolete Calibre ‘The British Cadet Rifle’ With ‘Take Down’ Action. Sn 19081. - 19081 This is an excellent Martini Action .297/230 Obsolete Calibre Cadet Rifle. Many of these rifles were sent to Australia for their military training. It is rare to find British examples without Australian marks. Our rare example without Australian Government marks is complete with sling Swivels, cleaning rod, block & blade foresight, adjustable graduated 50-100-200 yards ladder rear sight and steel butt plate. The steel barrel's bore is near mint clean & bright with typical light rifling and it has a crisp martini action which works crisply. It has all original wood furniture and metal work. The barrel is marked ‘The British Cadet Rifle’ & has calibre detail. The action is crisply stamped ‘A&N CSLtd London (Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Ltd)’ (Army & Navy Stores was a department store group in the United Kingdom, which originated as a co-operative society for military officers and their families during the nineteenth century. The society became a limited liability company in the 1930s and purchased a number of independent department stores during the 1950s and 1960s). **RARE**MINT BORE**C1880 Imperial British Enfield Afghanistan Mashin Khana Kabul Arsenal Martini Henry .577x 450 Obsolete Calibre Infantry Rifle. Sn 20636 - 20636 By 1880, the so-called Great Game between the Russian Empire and Great Britain over Central-Asia entered one of its final phases after the British victory in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880). In the web of diplomatic and political maneuvers so apparent during this turbulent period, it was of paramount importance for the British Crown to keep the Russians at bay and reduce their influence on Afghanistan as much as possible. After the second Anglo Afghan war Great Britain installed a new, far more cooperative Emir, Abdur Rahman. He is considered to be the father of the modern state of Afghanistan & with a modern State, you need a modern Army with modern Small Arms to defend against the threat from Russia & the capability to produce them indigenously, all of which, the Emir was far too aware of. The British crown with the help of the British arms maker Enfield & Emir Abdur Rahman set up a modern arms and munitions factory in Kabul. Called, Mashin Khana by the locals. Today, we know it as the Kabul arsenal. The Kabul machine works is a little-known and often very misunderstood producer of small arms. However, period products of this Armoury are now making their way to the collectors market. It is estimated that, between 5 and 8000 of each type of Martini-Henry variants may have been produced using Enfield machinery & parts. 7 types of Enfield quality Martinis made at the Kabul armoury have been identified and classified. Extrapolating from there puts production figures between 35 and around 56,000 pieces, not many survived. This is an excellent, rare, example of an Enfield quality Martini Henry .577x 450 Service Rifle made at the Mashin Khana Kabul Arsenal. The metal work is undamaged and is in the white. It is stamped on its right side with the Kabul Arsenal ‘towers with flags’ device & Perso-Arabic script. The rifle has other Perso-Arabic script markings. The 33” barrel’s rifled bore is near mint, clean with crisp multi groove rifling. The rifle’s cocking and firing actions are crisp. It has sling swivels, steel butt plate, steel ram rod, bayonet lug, rear graduated ladder sight and block & blade fore sight. It has all original woodwork. The wood is undamaged with just light bumps and bruises consistent with age. The price for this rare Martini includes UK delivery.
