British East India Company Pattern F Percussion .750 Musket Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Infantry Musket. Sn - 21393:12 This is a British East India Company Pattern F percussion .75” infantry musket. The musket has a 39 inch smoothbored barrel with London proof marks. The barrel is clean and has staining consistent with use. The musket has all original woodwork with the correct Brunswick pattern scroll trigger guard, three rammer pipes, the unique pattern E.I.C. spring bayonet catch protruding through the nose-cap. The musket is complete with the correct and original E.I.C. pattern ramrod. The lockplate is stamped with EIC’s Rampant Lion trademark with a double line border. The musket measures 55 inches in length with a 39 inch barrel the bore having just light staining consistent with age. The F type musket was produced between 1845 and 1851. The cocking and firing actions work crisply. Muskets such as this saw service and action in many Indian campaigns from 1845 including the 2nd Sikh War, and the Great Indian Mutiny it was used by both sides. Many of these muskets were returned to this country from the Nepal Royal Armoury. During the Mutiny Nepal sent a contingent in support of the British on arrival in India they were armed with muskets such as this and upon return to Nepal together with Indian Mutineers who were disarmed and the weapons kept by the Nepal authorities for issue to its forces. This musket bears Nepalese regimental stampings under the trigger guard and on the top of the butt plate showing re issue to Nepalese troops. English, C1840 Thomas Conway Manchester .500 Calibre Percussion Target / Dueling Pistol With Damascus Steel Octagonal Barrel & German Silver Mounts. Sn 21393:9 - 21393:9 Thomas Conway was an English Gunsmith with premises in Manchester at 179 Chapel Street, 3 Market Street & 43 Blackfriars Street, Deansgate between 1803-1852. This is an excellent original percussion target or Dueling pistol by Conway Manchester. Its octagonal Damascus steel barrel is 9 ½” length (15 ¾” overall). The barrel has a gold band inlaid at the breech and the barrel is sighted. The smooth bore of the barrel has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The pistol has its original ebonised wood ram rod with polished horn end cap and brass tip which unscrews to reveal a worm. Its action plate, trigger guard with extended tang and acanthus bud finial and Dolphin hammer are nicely engraved with a foliate decoration. The action plate is signed by the manufacturer 'Conway’ & the top barrel flat ‘Manchester’. The pistol has its original undamaged walnut stock with chequered panel grip, German silver stock mounts and Inlaid void German Silver escutcheon. The pistol cocks and dry fires crisply. C1870 Clamshell Hard Cased Belgian Liege 9mm Pin Fire Obsolete Calibre 6 Shot Double Action Only Revolver With Ornate Tooled Decoration, Folding Trigger, Captive Swivel Extractor Rod. Sn 21393:4 - 21393:4 This is an attractive 6 shot 9mm pin fire revolver made C1870. It measures 7 ½” overall with a 3 ¼” two stage barrel. The barrel’s rifled bore has staining & reidue consistent with age and use. The metal work in the white has attractive deep cut tooled foliate decoration & typical folding trigger. Its original chequered panel gutta percha hard rubber grips are excellent. The pistol is stamped with Liege ‘crown N’ & ‘P’ marks. The cylinder is numbered ‘67’. The pistol is side gate loading & has a captive swivel ejector rod. The pistol is correctly double action only and its firing mechanism works as it should. The pistol is accompanied by its original leather covered wood pistol shaped clamshell type hard case with clasp fastener. The case is lined and padded with rich purple material. **LARGE & HEAVY** C1860 English Sanderson (Possibly ‘Elephant King‘ George P. Sanderson) 4 Bore Black Powder Big Game Percussion Elephant Gun For Use With ¼ Pound Lead Ball Of 1” Diameter. Sn 21370 - 21370 A substantial 4 Bore sporting gun by Sanderson c.1860 suitable for hunting elephant and other dangerous big game. Until the late 1870s, with the advent of large calibre breach loaders - and ultimately the nitro express double rifles at the end of that century - the single barrel smooth bore muzzle loading 4 bore was the most potent manageable option for hunting elephant, firing a quarter pound lead ball of one inch diameter. By default these big sporting pieces became known as "Elephant guns", but were actually multi-use weapons that could be used for shooting anything. Large smooth bores were favoured by the best known big game hunters of the era such as George P. Sanderson in India, Frederick Selous, William Finaughty and Sir Samuel Baker - and before that, Petrus Jacobs, a legend among the earlier Boer Elephant hunters who were armed with similar smooth bores - initially flintlocks and later percussion. Between 1874 and 1876 Selous killed 78 Elephant with a 4 bore muzzle loader. George Peress Sanderson (1848– 5 May 1892, Madras) was a renowned British big game hunter, later naturalist who worked in the public works department in the princely state of Mysore. He began a system for capturing wild elephants that were destructive to agriculture so as to use them in captivity. He was known in the popular press as the "Elephant King" and wrote a book on his life in the forests of India. Rudyard Kipling is believed to have modelled the character "Petersen Sahib" in his Toomai of the Elephants after him. With such primitive guns it was necessary for the hunter to shoot from very close range, so sights and rifling were of no advantage, and smooth bores were generally favoured by professional hunters. These could be reloaded more quickly than early rifles, kicked less, penetrated more and didn't twist in the hand. Early on, elephants were typically shot from horseback, enabling the rider to escape from a wounded animal to reload, often requiring multiple shots for a kill. This back action percussion smooth bored example has a 35" barrel with a sighting plane and bead foresight and weighs in at around 13lbs. The bore has light staining & residue consistent with age & use. The gun is in very good overall condition. It is surprisingly wieldy for such a massive gun, quick to point and balances nicely. The gun measures 52” overall length. The all original Walnut wood furniture with chequered wrist & fore stock and polished horn fore end cap are excellent. The stock has a steel butt plate. The action plate, heavy hammer, trigger guard with extended tang & Pineapple finial have excellent foliage engraved decoration. The action plate is also signed ‘Sanderson’ (we cannot find a period maker named Sanderson in our books, could this gun have been owned by the famous ‘Elephant King’ George Peress Sanderson?). French St Etienne & Tulle Arsenal Marked Model 1842 Light Infantry .73” Calibre Percussion Musket Carbine Regiment Marked ‘2G’. A 1082 - A 1082 Model 1842 Musket was developed from the preceding Model 1840. The arms were the first percussion weapons adopted for general service in the French army. The Model 1842 barrel is forged with an integral bolster that is flush with the barrel. The Model 1840 was not produced in any quantity before being replaced. Both models were produced in two lengths, one for the regular infantry and a short version for light infantry. The French Model 1842 percussion musket was bought and used by both the Union and Confederate Army in small quantities during the American Civil War. The weapons were the first to employ a back-action lock. This is a very good original French Light Infantry Model 1842 Tulle & St Etienne Arsenal marked .73” Calibre Percussion Musket Carbine. It has even patina to the metal work throughout. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the action plate is signed with St Etienne Arsenal detail. Its 29 ¾” sighted barrel (44 ½” overall) has a smooth bore. The bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. The regulation brass fittings have proof/inspection marks. The wood has inspection marks including Tulle arsenal mark. It has its original iron ramrod. The brass butt plate is Regiment or Unit marked ‘2G’ possibly 2nd Garde Regiment. C1840 English Thomas Conway Manchester Single Barrel 10 Bore Muzzle Loading Single Barrel Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun With Damascus Steel Barrel. Sn 20859 - 20859 Thomas Conway was an English Gunsmith with premises in Manchester at 179 Chapel Street, 3 Market Street & 43 Blackfriars Street, Deansgate between 1803-1852. (see page 196 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol.2).This is a single barrel percussion shotgun made C1840 by Thomas Conway Manchester. It has a 30” browned sighted Damascus steel barrel & measures 55 ¼” overall. The barrel’s smooth bore staining & residue consistent with age and use. It has all original walnut stock which has knocks bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use (there is a small piece of wood absent from the fore stock and an old stable & secure fine crack). It has a steel butt plate with extended tang, steel trigger guard with extended tang & Dolphin hammer. The action plate has foliate engraved decoration and is signed ‘Conway’. The top of the action tang is crisply signed ‘Conway Manchester’ The breech has gold lines and gold inlaid cartouche which looks like ‘Bixvers or Beavers Patent’. C1845 Irish Kavanagh Dublin .750 Musket Bore Percussion Musket With Regulation Brass Furniture Irish Registration Marked ‘S6007’ (County Sligo) & Ram Rod. Sn 21271 - 21271 William Kavanagh & Sons; Wm & Jas Kavanagh; William Kavanagh & Son, Dublin, Ireland was a Gun, Pistol & Rifle Maker, Gunpowder Merchant from 1796-1928 Although established in 1796, William Kavanagh was first recorded in 1817 at 6 Anderson's Court, Greek Street, Dublin. In 1822 he made his sons (William and James) partners in the business. While he moved to 4 Upper Ormond Quay to trade as William Kavanagh, his sons traded at 11 Dame Street as William Kavanagh & Sons. By 1840 William Kavanagh was trading at 4 Upper Ormond Quay as a gunpowder merchant. In 1847 William Kavanagh & Sons took additional premises at 12 Dame Street into which they moved relinquishing 11 Dame Street later that year. In 1849, James Kavanagh was recorded trading on his own as a gunmaker at 4 Upper Ormond Quay. William Kavanagh (& Son?) was recorded at 12 Dame Street. William II appears to have managed the business. In 1853 William Snr retired or died and William and James took over to trade as Wm & James Kavanagh, gun makers and gunpowder merchants. They exhibited at the Dublin exhibition in that year. In 1872 it appears that James retired or died because William continued at 12 Dame Street with a factory in Dame Lane. It may have been at this time that William (II) made his son a partner and that the business became William Kavanagh & Son, Gun Makers and Gunpowder Merchants, in 1881 they were recorded as such. This is an, original, percussion musket by Kavanagh of Dublin. It is 55 ¼” overall length with a heavy 39 ¼” browned Damascus steel sighted barrel. Its smooth bore has just staining & residue consistent with age & use. It has its original action plate crisply signed by the maker ‘Kavanagh Dublin’. It has all original walnut stock with, iron ramrod and regulation type brass furniture. The butt plate tang has the Irish registration mark ‘S6007’ for County Sligo (these Irish County identification marks were introduced by the short lived Arms Act of 1843). **ORNATE**C1870 Liege Belgium 7mm Pinfire Obsolete Calibre 6 Shot Revolver With Folding Trigger, Octagonal Barrel & Captive Ejector Rod. Sn 21359 - 21359 This is a very ornate pinfire double action revolver made in Liege C1870. The steel frame, cylinder and barrel have quality deep cut tooled decoration and inlaid polished steel studs. It measures 7” overall with a 3” octagonal barrel. The pistol’s rifled bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. It has a typical steel folding trigger and attractive Fish scale effect scalloped walnut grips. The barrel has Liege ‘Crown R’ mark and the cylinder has Crown ELG Liege proof mark. The pistol is side gate loading, has a brass post fore sight and a captive steel ejector rod. Dutch Beaumont Model 1871 11x52R Beaumont Obsolete Calibre Single Shot Bolt Action Carbine By P. Stevens Maastricht. Sn 18196:1 - 18196:1 The Beaumont is a turning bolt action rifle who's major distinctive feature is the arrangement of the mainspring which is housed inside the large, hollow, bulbous two-piece bolt handle. The rifle was designed by a Dutch engineer from Maastricht, from whom it gets is name. Apparently inspired by the French Chasspot, forerunner to the M1874 French Gras & similar to its early single shot bolt rifle contemporaries such as the German M1871Mauser. The rifle chambers the UK obsolete calibre11x52R Beaumont cartridge. P. Stevens of Maastricht was contracted to produce the majority of Beaumont rifles. This carbine variant example is in excellent condition. It has original undamaged wood furniture. The metal work in the white is clean and undamaged. The barrel length is 19 ¾” and it measures 38 ¾” overall. The rifle has numbers ‘451’ on the breech and bolt and other un-matching numbers. The barrel has inspection marks and ‘1871’ model designation. The breech is stamped by the maker ‘P. Stevens Maastricht’. It has an adjustable rear sight, block & blade foresight, sling swivels, cleaning rod & steel butt plate. The bore is clean with crisp rifling. The loading & firing actions work crisply. **QUALITY**C1800 Avery & Co New Bond Street London 32 Bore Percussion Traveling Pistol (C1820 Converted From Flintlock) With Octagonal Damascus Barrel. Sn 21355 - 21355 This is an excellent original percussion pistol (Period Converted From Flintlock). It is 12” overall with a 7” octagonal steel barrel. The barrel has a small German silver bead fore sight, ‘v’ notch block rear sight, silver band and roundel insert at the breech. The smooth bore is clean. The action plate is signed by the maker Avery & Co London, the top of the barrel is signed ’63 New Bond Street’ and has the makers cartouche (all illustrated). It has a walnut stock with chequered panel grip. The stock has a void silver escutcheon. The wood has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age. Its action plate, steel trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial & action tang have foliate engraved decoration. The action has a safety bolt. It is complete with its ebonised wood ramrod with polished horn end cap and steel worm. Its action works crisply.
