Set Of 4 Official H.M.S.O. Books From The Imperial War Museum Reserve Stock. Sn. 13084:7 - 13084:7
This set of books are all from the reserve stock of the Imperial War Museum library which were released recently. They comprise Field Service Regulations Volume 1 (Organization and Administration) 1930 and Field Service Regulations volume 2 (Operations – General) 1935. Both of these manuals carry the name of Capt. J.W.Gibson. There is also a copy of the Army Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation 1934 with a rubber stamp to the front of 32 Reserve M.T. Company R.A.S.C., 12 June 1941. This volume also carries three Imperial War Museum rubber stamps and a withdrawn from stock stamp. The final volume is a Manual of Driving and Maintenance for Mechanical Vehicles (1937). This is a nice W.W.2 period set with scope for further research of the named and dated volumes. Original Set Of British Army Field Service Regulations Vol 1 And Vol 2 dated 1909 And Manual Of Field Engineering, 1911, Including Two Pencil Written Note Forms From The Front Lines And A Pillow Receipt All Dated 1917. (From The Imperial War Museum Reser - 13084:6
These three volumes were purchased from the Imperial War Museum reserve stocks which were recently released. Several volumes have the I.W.M. stock stamp. The set comprises a Field Service Regulations Vol 1 and Vol 2, 1909. Part one has rubber stamps for O.C. 3rd Line Depot. 8th Mid. Divn, Train plus numerous Imperial War Museum Stamps. However also with this volume are 2 pencil written messages to 2nd Lt. Lowles from 2nd Lt. Tattersall from the front lines regarding movements and observations from the front lines dated 11th June 1917. Also included is a receipt dated 12/5/17 to a Lt. Lowles for a pillow from a supplier in Tonbridge. The other volume is a copy of a Manual of Field Engineering dated 1911 also profusely stamped with Imperial War Museum stamps and withdrawn stock stamps. These are an excellent set with their original red cloth covers, complete with period advertisements and with provenance from the Imperial War Museum with the added bonus of the contemporary notes and names which should give scope for further research. Original 1938 British Army Field Service Pocket Book, (From The Imperial War Museum Reserve Stock). Sn. 13084:1 - 13084:1
This is an excellent volume of the Field Service Pocket Book 1938, purchased from the Imperial War Museum reserve stock. The book contains19 pamphlets including military symbols, field engineering, intelligence, protection against gas etc, many are stamped with the Imperial War Museum rubber stamp and the red cover carries an official compliment type slip “from the Ashley Havinden Collection.” Ashley Havinden was an influential British graphic designer born in Kent in 1903. At the outbreak of W.W.2 he joined the Highgate Home Guard. Ashley designed posters for the A.R.P. and War Loan adverts for the Ministry of Information. He then joined the army camouflage section and on his promotion to Captain in 1943 was transferred to the Petroleum Warfare Department to work on ‘PLUTO’ (Pipe-Line Underwater Transportation of Oil also known as Pipe Line Under The Ocean), the fuel pipeline to the Normandy, from Shanklin to Cherbourg. Scarce First Edition 1933 WW1 Australian War Artists 33 Bound Prints, Original Box. BO 309 - Bo 309
This is a superb copy of a scarce 1933 first edition published by the Board of Management to the Australian War Memorial and was edited by J.L.Teloar, the director of the A.W.M. at Canberra. The book contains 52 plates in colour and duo-tone of official war artist paintings and covers all aspects of W.W.1 on both land, sea and air. Each coloured plate has a corresponding text opposite which gives details of the scene depicted by the artist. This is a first edition on the original buckram cloth binding with the Australian coat of arms in gilt embossed to the front cover. The book is an oblong folio in very tight and undamaged condition due no doubt to being contained in its scarce original box. Most copies are damaged or have had plates removed. This copy is in a nice complete condition and is rare to find in its original box with its original protective paper dust sleeve. 1st Edition Handbook For The Ordnance, Q.F. 25 Pr, Mark II On Carriage, 25 Pr. Mark I Land Service 1940. BO 308 - BO 308
This is an official publication by H.M.S.O. for the Standard British Field Gun and Howitzer of WW2 and beyond. It was introduced into service just before the war started combining high angle and direct fire, relatively high rates of fire and a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece. It remained the British Army's primary field piece well into the 1960's. This copy of the handbook is a 1st edition of 1940 and has a multitude of ammendments dated 1941 and 1942. As it was an official publication and not for general release to the press or the public, copies are scarce and highly sought after. This is a clean, tight copy of a rare book.
