C1900 R. Raine Carlisle .295/300 Obsolete Calibre Lever Break Action Breech Loading Single Barrel Rook Rifle With External Hammer & Octagonal Barrel. Sn 19212 - 19212
This is an excellent .295/300 Obsolete Calibre lever break action rook rifle. It has a 26 ¼” octagonal barrel with tooled flat top rib and measures 42" overall. The barrel's rifled bore has staining consistent with age & use. The barrel has calibre detail .295/ 300 and is signed by the maker or retailer ‘R. Raine Carlisle’. The blued metal work has even patina. The action has a lever with thumb flat which when depressed breaks the barrel for loading. The walnut stock is undamaged and the fore stock has a polished horn end cap. The stock has steel butt plate. The weapon has fixed fore and 3 leaf rear sights graduated 50-100-150 yards. 1849 British WD Enfield Tower.702 Calibre Muzzle Loading, Percussion Rifled Carbine Stock Impressed ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. Sn 19164 - 19164
The London based Barnett family of Gunsmiths are recorded at various addresses in London from 1796 to 1908 starting with Thomas Barnett at 134 Minories who later became Thomas Barnett & Sons and later John Edward Barnett at the Minories & 37 Camomile Street, ending as JE Barnett & Sons Ltd at Brewhouse Lane, Leaman Street & Duncan Street (see page 140 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol.1). This is an original British 1849 Enfield Tower made Carbine with stock marked by Barnett. It has excellent all original wood stock and original finish to the metal work. The wood is crisply impressed with ‘WD & Broad Arrow’ and most likely the stock maker’s cartouche ‘Barnett Gunmakers London’. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the action plate is crisply stamped ‘Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & ‘Tower’ (Enfield) ‘1849’. Its 24" barrel (40” overall) is rifled and has just light staining consistent with age and use. The barrel has proofs. It has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight and block & blade fore sight. It has iron ramrod and sling swivels. The carbine also has brass fore end block, trigger guard, ram rod flutes & butt plate. The carbine cocks & dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery. This is an excellent, rare to find rifle Model 1868 rifle (converted from Springfield Model 1863). This rifle has the correct trapdoor loading system, modified lock and hammer. It has its all walnut stock which has knocks, bumps and bruises consistent with age and use. The metal work has even patina. The action plate is marked: "U.S (Army) SPRINGFIELD" together with 1863 (model) & American Eagle & Shield mark . The top of the action is marked ‘1870’ (conversion date) together with American eagle and shield mark. The steel butt plate tang is stamped "US" (Army). It has a fixed fore sight and flip up ladder rear sight. The bore of the rifle’s 32 ½” round steel barrel has well defined rifling and is clean. The rifle measures 51 ½” overall length. The rifle has its original steel ram rod and sling swivels. The barrel and breech have matching numbers 14535. The weapon cocks and dry fires and the action is strong. The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle was a .577 calibre Minié-type muzzle-loading rifled musket, used by the British Empire from 1853 to 1867; after which many were replaced in service by the cartridge-loaded Snider–Enfield rifle. This 3 band muzzle loading P1853 Enfield has been contemporarily converted to the breech loading snider system. The rifle has no maker, date or inspection marks. It has all original walnut stock which has bumps and bruises to be expected, brass butt plate, trigger guard, fore end block & steel cleaning rod. The rifle has its original block and blade fore sight and flip up graduated ladder rear sight. Its sling swivels are fitted with buff leather sling. The 36” barrel’s bore has staining consistent with age & crisp rifling. The cocking & firing action works crisply. The rifle comes with an original Socket Bayonet. This is a very good original MK IV 1887 dated .577x .450 Martini Henry, long lever Service Rifle. It is fully ordnance stamped and has its original woodwork throughout. It has block and blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, steel butt plate, sling swivels fitted with leather sling, cleaning rod & bayonet lug. The steel barrel's bore is near mint clean & bright with crisp rifling. The muzzle is fitted with original removable brass muzzle sight protector cover which is stamped with small ordnance inspection mark and has a struck out number (illustrated). The metal work has even patina. The action works crisply. The action is stamped on the right side Crown VR (Victoria Regina) Enfield, Mark IV model designation and dated '1887'. The action is also numbered ‘1190’. The barrel has several Victorian and WD proof inspection marks. There are no Nepalese marks which indicates that this rifle was in solely British Service. This Victorian Lowe Chester 13 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Single Barrel Percussion Sporting / Hunting Shotgun has a 32 ½” long steel barrel & measures 48 ½” overall. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. It has a shallow grooved action rear sight. The gun has an undamaged walnut stock with German Silver fore end cap. The wrist has an inlaid silver escutcheon with engraved stylised monogram. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang, trigger guard with extended tang and Pineapple finial & steel hammer. The metal work has areas of foliate engraved decoration. The barrel has a partial gold band and gold manufacturer cartouche ‘Lowe Chester’ ( either Thomas Lowe recorded at Northgate Street Chester 1815-1834, William Lowe Northgate Street 1847-1869 or James Lowe Five Ashes Hough Green Chester 1864 see page 277 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). The Braendlin Armoury, was at one time arguably the largest British commercial manufacturer of Martinis with many of the high-end sporters and volunteer rifles of the era. Victorian British Officers & Militia Units regularly purchased their own Martini Henry Rifles. These Rifles were manufactured under Enfield contracts to the same specification as their Military counterparts and sold into the retail market for private purchase. This is an excellent, original, Victorian private purchase, Martini Henry, short lever carbine size rifle by the Braendlin Armoury. It has its original, cleaning rod, block and blade fore sight, flip up ladder rear sight, grooved trigger & sling swivels. It has all original undamaged woodwork throughout which has just light bumps and bruises to be expected. The underside of the stock is impressed with number ‘1242’. The steel barrel's bore is near mint with crisp Henry patent rifling. The barrel is marked with Henry’s Patent (illustrated) and has proof marks. The Martini Patent marked action works as it should and has 'Bakers Improved Safety Bolt No.120'. The Baker’s safety lever functions as it should. Enfield Pattern 1853 cavalry carbines were used by the British army In India. By 1866 the stock of Tower P 53’s became diminished and conditions in India called for another issue of smooth bore carbines resulting in production of the ‘Bengal Light Cavalry Carbine’ . The Tower made Enfield 'Bengal Native Cavalry Carbine' were sealed by the ordnance on 22nd February 1867, under order number 57/16/2224/2263. (see C H Roads page113). The first production of 8000 Carbines used lock plates that were available from store, most if not all dated 1858. The 'Bengal Native Cavalry carbine' is smoothbore and .656 calibre. Known as the the P58-67 it has a two piece butt plate with 'chequering' between. This original Carbine has a two piece Butt Plate and 1858 dated lock which identifies it as a 'Bengal Native Cavalry Carbine’. The carbines were generally of superior quality to the P 53’s. This original Pattern 1858 / 67 Bengal Light Cavalry Carbine has the correct butt with brass edge caps and central exposed wood cross hatch chequering. It is in good condition. It has all original walnut stock which has knocks and bumps to be expected. The metal work has areas of service wear. It has a heavy military percussion hammer and the lock plate is crisply stamped Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & 'Tower’ (Enfield) together with inspection mark and 1858 date indicating it was one of the first production Bengal light cavalry carbines. Its 21" barrel (37” overall) & has a smooth bore which has staining and residue consistent with age. The top of the barrel is stamped with Victorian proof/inspection mark and number ‘55’. It has a fixed ‘v’ notch plate rear sight and block & blade fore sight. It has the correct under barrel captive swivel steel ramrod. The carbine also has brass fore end block & trigger guard. The guard is marked ‘33DSB’ most likely a unit mark (unknown). It is complete with correct steel saddle bar & ring. The stock is impressed with indistinct roundels. It cocks & dry fires crisply. This is a very good Rook rifle in by Adams London (most likely Robert Adams was shop manager for George and John Deane of 30 King William St., London Bridge, and designed the revolver came to be known as the Deane Adams Deane model. Adams split with the Deane firm in 1856. The Deane firm remained at 30 King William St. and became Dean and son’). The metal work has even patina. The 25 ½” octagonal barrel has a near mint bore, bright & clean with crisp rifling (40” overall length). The underside of the barrel has black powder proofs. It has all original Walnut woodwork with straight hand stock which has chequered panels at the wrist and steel butt plate. It has a ‘v’ notch plate rear sight with additional leaf sight and blade fore sight. The side lever break action loading & firing actions work crisply. The stock is mounted with a white metal presentation plate inscribed ‘Radley College Athletic Sports 1872 Senior Mile Race First Prize Throwing Cricket Ball First Prize E. Christy’. Marshall was a Captain with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and on retirement went onto be a respected local huntsman, historian and nature expert, writing for the Rochdale Observer for over 40 years. With his love of history he amassed a collection of historical, military arms and armour related items and was known for his noted collection of Lancashire Fusillers Insignia. On his death in 2012 his collection was passed to his son Mr Jeremy Marshall who also took over the family business ‘Towers of Rochdale’ which was established in the early 1900s and sold guns and country pursuit items. Jeremy was a prominent figure in the firearms industry and adviser to some government and business agencies but sadly passed away in November 2020.
