19th Century Ottoman Empire 24 Bore Miquelet Lock Rifle With Octagonal Barrel, Tiger Stripe Olive Or Palm Wood Stock, Silvered Hand Tooled Decoration, Action & Barrel Arabic Gunsmith / Family Signatures & Ram Rod. Sn 15226 - 15226 Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, the Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th Centuries. The miquelet may have come to the attention of arms makers in Istanbul & North Africa via long-established trade routes from Italian city-states through the port of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) to provinces on the Balkan Peninsula. Other avenues were probably provided by booty from corsair raids and/or from the many Ottoman-Euro conflicts of the period. The muzzle loading weapons were generally handmade weapons, and consequently they widely varied in their construction. They were seen as very personal weapons, and unlike the typical military weapons of the time which were very plain and utilitarian, the weapons tended to be well crafted and were usually intricately decorated. The stocks were handmade and ornately decorated. This is a 19th century miquelet lock musket in the form found in the Ottoman Empire in that era. It measures 48” overall length. It has an octagonal 34" long steel barrel which is 14.93 mm muzzle diameter (approx. 24 Bore). The barrel has a small silver blade fore sight and grooved block rear sight. The bore has staining consistent with age and crisp well defined rifling. The barrel flats and underside of the action have detailed silvered Arabic signatures most likely gunsmith and or family names. It has steel barrel bands. The hammer and action have ornate silvered decoration. The weapon has its original steel ram rod. Its original Olive or Palm wood stock has an attractive Tiger stripe hue and bone or Ivory inlays. It has a steel ball end trigger on the underside of the stock. The butt is mounted with decorative metal plates. The wood and metal have the wear and patina to be expected of a native weapon of its age. The rifle cocks and dry fires but due to age and condition it is advised that this action is not performed to avoid damage to the action. The price includes UK delivery. C1850, English Thomas Conway, Manchester Double Barrel Side By Side Muzzle Loading Percussion Combination Cape Rifle (.600 Calibre Rifled Barrel & 12 Bore Smoothbore Shotgun Barrel) With Walnut Stock & Ramrod. Sn 14949 - 14949 This is an excellent Double barrel percussion Cape rifle made C 1850. It has 30" browned steel barrels and measures 47 " overall. The barrels, set side by side have a central flat top barrel rib. The rifle barrel is .600 calibre and the bore is clean with well defined rifling. The shotgun barrel is smooth 12 bore. The bore is clean. It has its original walnut stock with chequered panels at the fore stock and wrist. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang and trigger guard with extended tang. The metal work has nice foliage engraving to the action plates, breach tang, Dolphin hammers, trigger guard and butt plate. The action plates are both signed by the manufacturer 'Conway' (most likely Thomas Conway an English Gunsmith with premises in Manchester at 179 Chapel Street, 3 Market Street & 43 Blackfriars Street, Deansgate between 1803-1852) . Both barrels have silver roundel inserts at the breech. It has double triggers and the weapon cocks & dry fires perfectly as it should. The shotgun is fitted with blade foresight & 3 leaf flip up rear sights each with silver sighting lines. The stock has 2 sling swivel lugs and it has its original brass tipped and capped wood ramrod. FINE COLLECTOR QUALITY’ RARE, 1833-1835 American 2nd Type, 40 Bore, Percussion Henry Deringer With Full Wood Stock, German Silver Fittings, Ram Rod & Appraisal Document From American Expert L.D. Eberhart. Sn 14833 - 14833 The original Deringer pistol was a small single-shot muzzle loading percussion pistol with wood stock named after Henry Deringer, a famous 19th-century maker of small pocket pistols; with the advent of cartridge firearms, pistols began to be produced in the modern form known as a derringer. This rare 2nd Type Henry Deringer is in excellent condition and has been appraised by American author and firearms expert L.D. Eberhart. His appraisal document accompanies this pistol which in 2011 he valued at $ 5,250. In his appraisal, the text of which is illustrated in image 2, he dates the pistol’s manufacture to between 1833 & 1835 and describes it as a ‘fine collector quality Henry deringer pistol’. It measures 8 ½” overall length with a 4 ½” octagonal steel barrel and ¾” breech. The barrel’s rifled bore is approx. 40 Bore (11.40mm at the muzzle opening). The bore is clean with crisp well defined rifling. All iron parts are blued apart from the barrel which is the correct, period solid plum brown. The breech and action plate have crisp decoration in the period style and have second type Henry company markings ‘Deringer Phila’ . It has German silver fittings and small German silver fore sight and iron ‘v’ notch plate rear sight. Its original walnut full stock is undamaged with just the bumps and bruises to be expected with age. The grip has light chequering . The back of the wrist is inlaid with a void German silver shield. The derringer has its original ram rod with brass end cap. Its cocking and firing actions function perfectly. The price for this rare collector’s piece with appraisal document includes UK delivery. **UNAVAILABLE**17/1/24**1897 - 1900 Dutch Wilhelm Von Kreyfelt Rotterdam Holland Martini Action 10.4 x 38R Swiss Vetterli Obsolete Calibre Sporting / Target Rifle With Octagonal Barrel. Sn 14619 - 14619 Wilhelm Von Kreyfelt was a Dutch gunmaker active around 1870 until 1900. Little is known about Von Kreyfelt other than he made or modified this Martini action sporting / target rifle which is in10.4 x 38R Swiss Veterli, an obsolete calibre. It has a rotating bolt feature which allows the use of both rim fire and centre fire rounds in that calibre. The right side of the action is signed ‘WILH. VON KREYFELT, ROTTERDAM’. It has a double scroll trigger guard/cocking lever, walnut half stock, the right side of the butt inset with an oval brass panel engraved "J.VAN SILLEVOLUT, ROTTERDAM", the left side with raised cheek piece. It has a curved steel butt plate, two sling swivels and brass ramrod. It has an 86cm octagonal blued steel barrel with bow type rear sight and block and blade fore sight. The left side of the barrel is numbered 852. The barrel’s bore is clean with crisp rifling. The rifle measures 129cm overall length. Its loading and firing actions work as they should. Large Victorian, Heavy Construction 20 Bore Large Game Percussion Sporting Gun For Ball. Sn 14311 - 14311 This is a large Victorian era percussion sporting gun for ball. It is 20 bore and has a 33" stepped round to octagonal brown barrel (49” overall). Its bore has just light staining to be expected with age and use. It has all original undamaged Walnut stock with chequered wrist & steel butt plate. The trigger guard has an extended tang with acanthus bud finial. The action and Dolphin hammer have engraved scrollwork decoration. The barrel has a small blade foresight and it has a ‘v’ notch block rear sight. The stock has a polished horn fore end block. The weapon has its original brass ram rod. There are no visible external manufacturer or proof marks on this weapon. The gun’s firing action works perfectly. **UNAVAILABLE**American Hopkins & Allen Arms Company 1870 Patent .41 Cal Rim Fire Single Shot (Colt) 'XL' Derringer with Pivot Octagonal Barrel. Sn 14246 - 14246 Hopkins & Allen Arms Company was a U.S. firearms manufacturing company based in Norwich, Connecticut that was founded in 1868 by Charles W. Allen, Charles A. Converse, Horace Briggs, Samuel S. Hopkins and Charles W. Hopkins. The Hopkins brothers ran the day-to-day operations of the company until it went bankrupt in 1916 and was subsequently bought by Marlin-Rockwell. Known as the ‘XL’ range of pistols, these derringers & revolvers were one of many revolvers based on S&W and Colt Patents produced in the 1860’s through to the late 1870s with dynamic or quirky names to attract sales. This is an original .41 Cal Rim Fire ‘XL’ derringer of the type made by Hopkins and Allen similar in design to Colt’s patent derringers. Our ‘XL’ derringer has a nickel plated steel frame with a sheathed trigger. Most of its original nickel plating is present. Its 2 ½” steel barrel pivots for loading which is achieved by depression of a steel button under the frame when the pistol is at half cock. The barrel pivots as it should and is tight. Its rifled bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The top of the barrel is signed ‘XL Derringer’ and one of the barrel flats is marked ‘Pat Apr 5 1870’. It has its original American Rosewood grips which are in very good condition and secured with a single recessed brass screw bolt. Its loading and firing actions work perfectly. There are no other external visible numbers or manufacturer’s marks on this piece. RARE, 1856-1874, American Wild West Era Merwin & Bray New York Single Shot .30 Rim Fire Calibre, Brass Framed Derringer With Octagonal Pivot Barrel. Sn 14247 - 14247 The American Joseph Merwin was involved with marketing and manufacturing revolvers as early as 1856. Based in New York City he formed an arms company known as Merwin & Bray. The company ceased trading under that name by 1874. This is an excellent example of the Merwin & Bray derringer which are hard to find. It has a brass frame with even patina & original American Walnut grip which has just the knocks bumps and bruises consistent with age. It has a 3 ¾” octagonal steel barrel & measures 6 ¾” overall. The bore has faint rifling & staining consistent with age & use. It has a sheathed trigger and brass blade foresight. The rear sight consists of a notch in the hammer spur. The top of the barrel is signed by the manufacturer ‘Merwin & Bray New York’. The derringer's loading and firing actions work perfectly. There are no other visible external manufacturer marks or numbers on this piece. The barrel pivots for loading at half cock and the barrel is released for loading by depression of a small steel button on the underside of the action. C1850 Victorian British Officer's Private Purchase Percussion Rifled 13 Bore Fusil Musket Saddle Carbine. Sn 14111 - 14111 This is a very good British Officer's Private Purchase Percussion Fusil saddle carbine made C1850. It has 20” long round steel barrel and measures 35 ½” overall. The bore has just light staining consistent with age and crisp rifling. Its walnut full stock has just minor bumps and bruises and is all original with no damage. It has brass fittings including forend block, butt plate, ramrod mounts and trigger guard with extended tang. The action has a plain steel side plate and heavy military hammer. The top of the barrel is stamped with proof marks. The stock has also has a brass plate engraved ‘Bore 13’. The weapon has its original steel ramrod. Victorian Era Nickel Plated Continental 7mm Pinfire 6 Shot Revolver With Folding Trigger & Octagonal Barrel. Sn 13721 - 13721 This is an excellent 7mm calibre, 6 shot, pin fire pocket revolver. It has a 3 ¼” octagonal barrel (7 ½” overall). It has attractive embossed and chequered gutta percha grips which are undamaged. The frame, barrel, grip strap and cylinder are decorated with an attractive engraved foliate design. It has its original captive ejector rod and blade fore sight. The pistol retains its original nickel plated finish which has just small areas of scuffing consistent with age and use. The frame, cylinder and underside of the barrel have crisp Continental ‘double crown over letter U’ inspection marks. It is side gate loading, has a folding trigger and is fully functioning with a crisp action. C1830 English, W. Bond London, 40 Bore Brass Flintlock Pocket Pistol With Screw Off Barrel & Concealed Trigger. Sn 13560 - 13560 A large family of English Gunsmith’s named Bond had premises at various London addresses including at 108 Leadenhall Street, 45 Cornhill and at 'The Golden Blunderbuss' 59 Lombard Street, between 1762 & 1879. The Bond's made and supplied firearms to The British East India Company. A member of that family William Thomas Bond is recorded as working as a Gunsmith on his own at the family addresses in 1836. A William Bond is also recorded as working as working with Edward Bond at 45 Cornhill 1826-1855 and Northumberland Alley London 1871-1879 (see page 143 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). This is a nice brass flintlock pocket pistol by W. Bond made C1830. The pistol is 6” overall with a 1 ½” screw off smoothbore brass barrel which is .486” at the muzzle opening (approx. 40 Bore). On the left side it is engraved 'W. Bond London'. The right ‘London’. It has a sliding safety, folding concealed trigger and the hammer is fitted with flint. The action works as it should with a strong spring. It has impressed proof /inspection marks on the underside of the frame. Its walnut bag shaped grip has fine chequering and is inlaid with a void silver roundel. The price includes UK delivery.
