SOLD SOLD (22/04) C1873 Kynoch Gun Factory converted 11mm / .43 Mauser Centre Fire Obsolete Calibre French Military Chassepot Model 1873 (M1866) Rifle & 1873 Dated French St Etienne Arsenal Model 1866 Brass Hilt Yataghan Sword Bayonet & Scabbard - A 1034 This is a British Kynoch Gun Factory converted French Military Chassepot M1866 rifle. After France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, the French government attributed a large portion of blame for the their loss on the Chassepot rifle's poor reliability on the battlefield. At this time the Chassepot utilised the needle fire system, French officials were convinced of the need to adopt a metallic cartridge centre fire system. In 1873, France awarded a contracted to the Kynoch Gun Factory, Aston here in the UK to modify and converted their remaining Chassepot rifles for centre fire. These modified rifles were designated the Chassepot Model 1873 rifle and can be identified by the markings on the barrel and receiver. In 1874 the French adopted the Gras Model 1874 rifle, although Kynoch continued reworking the Chassepot's until the late 1870s. During WWI many of these converted Chassepots were put back into service. It has a 32” barrel with a near mint bore, clean & bright with crisp rifling. It has steel furniture with even patina. It has the correct Kynoch Aston factory & calibre markings (all illustrated). The original stock is walnut and is in very good condition with just bumps & bruises to be expected. The wood is impressed with weapon number ‘13’ near to the bayonet lug. The bolt action loading and firing mechanisms work correctly. The rifle is serial number ‘II 14267’. The bolt and bayonet lug have un-matching number. It is fitted with sling swivels, cleaning rod, ladder rear sight and block & blade fore sight. The rifle comes with the correct, original French model 1866 Chassepot sword bayonet (See pages 70 and 71 of ‘An Illustrated History Of Bayonets’ by Brayley). The steel fullered single edged ‘T’ back Yataghan blade has staining consistent with age and is 22 ¾” length. It has the correct steel hooked quillon with muzzle ring. It has a ribbed brass grip with flat spring and steel push button. The cross guard is numbered ‘AB 54258’. The back of the blade is marked with the name of the French Châtellerault Arsenal signature and dated ‘1873' in French. It is complete with the correct steel scabbard. The scabbard has no dents and has its original fixed strap bar. The scabbard has original black finish and is stamped with matching number near to the throat. C1840 English Form, Peter Wharton, 6 Bore, Single Barrel, Muzzle Loading, Percussion Shotgun. Sn 17187. - 17187 This is an excellent, muzzle loading percussion shotgun in English form made C1840. It has a 33 ½” round brown wash steel barrel and measures 50 ½” overall. The smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age & use. The shotgun has its original walnut stock with chequered panels at the wrist & fore stock, polished horn fore end cap & steel butt plate. It has a steel lock plate signed by the maker or retailer ‘Peter Wharton’ (unknown) amongst foliate tooled decoration, Dolphin hammer, steel trigger guard with extended tang and acanthus bud finial also with tooled decoration. The shotgun is fitted with brass bead fore sight. The weapon cocks & dry fires perfectly as it should. MINT BORE, American Civil War Era .30 Calibre Williamsons 1864 Patent 6 Shot Teat Fire Revolver. Sn 17040 - 17040 Manufactured from 1864 to 1870 these 6 shot American front loading teat-fire revolvers were one of the most successful competitors to Smith & Wesson and it is believed that their popularity was one of the reasons for Colt's purchase of the National Arms Co in 1870. The underside of the 3 ¼” barrel is numbered "13444''. The barrel’s bore is near mint, clean with crisp rifling. "D. WILLIAMSON'S PATENT” is marked on the cylinder together with faint indistinct “JANUARY 5, 1864". The 'Gold Washed' frame and butt strap are nicely scroll engraved. EXTREMELY RARE, 1864 American Civil War James H. Merrill’s 2nd Type 1858 / 1861 Patent .54 Calibre Single Shot Breech Loading Cavalry Carbine With Brass Furniture, Steel Saddle Bar & Ring. Sn 17044:6 - 17044:6 The Merrill carbine was a breechloader firearm designed by Baltimore, Maryland gunsmith and inventor James H. Merrill. It was one of several firearms made by Merrill in fulfillment of contracts with the Union Government during the U.S. Civil War. The carbines were produced in two versions: First Type and Second Type. The First Type included a brass patchbox in the stock. The Second Type was produced without the patch box. The carbines were in service with the Union army between 1863 and 1865. This is an original example of the 2nd type Merrill 1858 / 61 patent carbine. The metal work is undamaged and but does have large areas of even pitting. Its original wood stock has knocks, bumps and bruises to be expected. The wood is impressed with indistinct factory cartouche. The 20" barrel’s rifled bore has heavy staining and residue consistent with age and use. It measures 37” overall. The carbine is fitted with 2 leaf rear swivel sight & blade fore sight. It also has a steel saddle bar & ring. It has a brass butt plate, barrel band and trigger guard. The action plate is stamped with Merrill’s name & 1858 -1861 patent detail ‘J.H. Merrill Balto Pat July 1858 / Apl 9. May 21-28-61’ together with 1864 date (all illustrated). The carbine is serial number '18794' which is stamped on the hinged breech cover. This type 2 carbine is correctly without patch box. The weapon’s loading and firing actions work as they should. Framed Display Board With Original Victorian Trade Labels Of The Prestigious Gunmakers James Purdey & Sons London & Later Images Of The company Premises. Sn 16851 - 16851 James Purdey founded James Purdey & Sons Limited in London, England in 1814, locating his business on Princes Street. Prior to starting out on his own, Purdey worked as head stocker for Joseph Manton, the foremost gunmaker of his time. In 1826 the company moved from the Princes Street location to Manton's former premises in Oxford Street. The founder's son, James Purdey the Younger, took over the running of the company from his father in 1858. James the Younger saw rapid change in the development and design of guns and rifles during his lifetime, essentially moving from muzzle loading flintlocks in the 1820s to breech loading hammerless ejectors by the 1880s. James the Younger was always at the forefront of advances in the design and building of his guns and rifles, and took out several patents for technical innovations over the years. Many of James the Younger's patents were adopted by other gunmakers. In 1882 the company moved from Oxford Street to new premises on the corner of South Audley Street and Mount Street, where the company remains to this day. James Purdey & Sons, specialises in high-end bespoke sporting shotguns and rifles. Purdey holds three Royal Warrants of appointment as gun and rifle makers to the British and other European royal families. The open faced, wood framed display board has original Victorian Purdey trade labels & later images of the Company premises. The trade labels and images are clean and intact & are mounted on a green felt background. The centre of the board has a void brass roundel. The frame measures 16 ½”x 11 ½” x 1 ¼”. Quality Maker, Victorian C1850 W. Greener Birmingham .600” Bore Muzzle Loading Sporting / Hunting Rifle With Octagonal Barrel. Sn 16883 - 16883 The famous W.W. (William Wellington) Greener English sporting shotgun and rifle manufacturer was established in 1829 and is still in business, with a fifth generation Greener serving on its board of directors. He produced weapons under the names W. Greener & W.W. Greener. In the mid 1800’s Greener was producing firearms at the St Mary’s Works Birmingham and had Royal appointments with the British Monarchy. This is a sporting rifle by W.Greener. It has an undamaged Walnut stock. The top pf the wrist is inlaid with void shield shaped brass escutcheon. It has a 28” brown wash octagonal barrel . The bore has staining consistent with age and crisp rifling. The rifle measures 45” overall. The action has foliate scrollwork decoration and is crisply marked ‘W. Greener’. The rifle has its original steel ramrod, heavy Dolphin hammer, small brass blade fore sight & brass ‘v’ notch plate rear sight. It has a steel butt plate with extended tang and hinged trap, trigger guard with extended tang and acanthus bud finial all decorated with foliate scroll work. The fore end block is steel and the weapon is fitted with sling swivels. The weapon's loading and firing actions work as they should. VERY RARE, LARGE, Persian 1779 Dated & Maker / Owner Named 15 Bore Muzzle Loading Toe Lock Musket Ornately Decorated With Inlaid Silver & Red Coral. Sn 16870. - 16870 This is an excellent, very rare to find, Persian Toe lock musket. It has a 1.31 metre long steel barrel with hand tooled silver barrel bands. The smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. It measures a large 1.73 metres overall length. The Gilt metal Toe lock action is complete and functions as it should, operated by a ball button lever on the underside of the stock. The underside of the action has Persian script which translates to ‘1779’ date and unknown original maker’s / owners name (illustrated in image 2). Its wood stock is intricately decorated with tooled silver plates and inlaid with pieces of red coral. It has an ornately tooled brass butt cap. The wood and metal have the wear and patina to be expected of a native Indian weapon of its age. The price for this impressive piece includes UK delivery. Rare Crimean War Period 1846 Imperial Russian Izhevsk Arsenal .700 Calibre Percussion Carbine Musket. Sn 16767 - 16767 This Pattern of Russian musket were an almost exact copy of the contemporary Model 1842 French Army musket of the period. Our example has a 26 ½” barrel and measures 42” overall length. The smoothbore has staining consistent with age. The barrel is numbered ‘No. 3206’ and has a small bead fore sight. Its original wood furniture has knocks bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use. The action plate is dated ‘1846’ which is repeated twice on the brass trigger guard and once on the brass butt plate. The Trigger guard and butt plate also have the Izhevsk Arsenal ‘bow & arrow’ marks. The butt plate also has the Imperial Russian double headed Eagle stamp. The carbine has a wood ram rod with brass ferrule. The action functions as it should. The price includes UK delivery. 1856 Continental Military 3 Band Muzzle Loading .600 Calibre Percussion Rifle With Unusual Integral Hinged Steel Nipple Guard. Sn 16416:26 - 16416:26 This is a very good Continental Military 1856 dated Percussion 3 Band Short Rifle. It has even patina to the metal work throughout. It has a heavy military percussion hammer. The action plate is signed with partial mark ‘P. Garci ??’ below ‘Crown O’ mark, number ‘N2773’ and ‘1856’ date. The action has an unusual integral hinged nipple guard. It's 38" barrel (55” overall) has a rifled barrel which has staining & residue consistent with age & use. It has its original steel ramrod & sling swivels. The rifle also has a steel fore end block, brass trigger guard, steel barrel bands, steel butt plate with indistinct inspection mark, block fore sight and ladder rear sight. C1860's British Army In India Officer’s Private Purchase Manton & Co Calcutta & London Enfield Pattern 3 Band .600 Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Musket. Sn 16416:20 - 16416:20 The Manton family were English gunmakers beginning with John in the early 1800's, then his younger brother Joseph who operated circa 1825-35. J. Manton and Son operated circa 1832-1862 and J. Manton & Co is later listed as operating in London and Calcutta. This is a British Army In India Officer’s Private Purchase Manton & Co Calcutta & London Enfield Pattern 3 Band .600 Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Musket. The action plate is stamped With stylised Queen’s Crown. It has all original wood stock which has bumps and bruises consistent with age and use and a contemporary repair to the wood near to the top of the action plate. The repair is stable & secure. The wood is stamped with small numbers (illustrated). It has a steel butt plate, fore end block & trigger guard with extended tang numbered ‘35162’. The rifle also has its steel ramrod, block and blade fore sight, sling swivels and bayonet lug. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. Total length is 49” with a 32 ¾” barrel. The barrel has proofs and is signed ‘Manton & Co Calcutta & London’. The cocking and firing action works as it should.
