Set Of 3 Sword And Bayonet Books. BO 1064 - BO 1064
This set comprises the revised edition of Brian Robson’s classic work on Swords of the British Army (The Regulation Patterns 1788 to 1914). The original appeared to great acclaim in 1975 and in the intervening years, the author has researched and revised his work so that this 1996 edition has now become the standard work. It covers all the regulation patterns from 1788 to 1914 and is profusely illustrated. Also included is a copy of World Swords 1400 – 1945 by Harvey J.S.Withers and covers all the most important swords from all the major countries. It is illustrated in colour and has a brief description of each sword with close up shots of the blades, hilts etc. There are over 2,000 full colour photographs making it an indispensable reference work. There is also a copy of An Illustrated History of Bayonets by Martin J.Brayley. This is also illustrated in colour and black and white with over 500 photographs of 300 bayonets. This has become one of our standard reference works in the office. This book covers some bayonets not found in other works. This is a valuable set of works on edged weapons. Small Family Collection of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Items. Sn. 13084:11 - 13084:11
This is a small collection of items form a family comprising an R.A.A.F. aerial dead reckoning computer Mark 1 manufactured in the 1930s by W&G of Melbourne for the Australian military. ( A printout of an identical item is included. A R.A.F.pilots flying manual from 1949, rubber stamped to the title page ‘TECHNICAL LIBRARY No 1 B F T S R.A.A.F. Uranqunity N.S.W.. There are also 5 other items namely a pocket fold out of silhouettes of aircraft ‘Air Ministry RESTRICTED October 1951’, a glossary of flying, a photo book of Jets of the R.A.F Series 1, a Selas picket signal reminder and an empty R.A.A.F. aircrew check lists folder. This is an accumulation of one mans service from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. This is a superb record of the recipients of the D.S.O. from its institution in 1886 to 1923 with descriptions of the deeds and services for which the award was given with many biographical and other details. This is a reprint of the original parts one and two from 1924. The book has now been made into one volume by J.B.Hayward and Son in 1978. E.S.B Williams and they are worthy of further research. Original 1938 British Army Field Service Pocket Book, (From The Imperial War Museum Reserve Stock). Sn. 13084:1 - 13084:1
This is an excellent volume of the Field Service Pocket Book 1938, purchased from the Imperial War Museum reserve stock. The book contains19 pamphlets including military symbols, field engineering, intelligence, protection against gas etc, many are stamped with the Imperial War Museum rubber stamp and the red cover carries an official compliment type slip “from the Ashley Havinden Collection.” Ashley Havinden was an influential British graphic designer born in Kent in 1903. At the outbreak of W.W.2 he joined the Highgate Home Guard. Ashley designed posters for the A.R.P. and War Loan adverts for the Ministry of Information. He then joined the army camouflage section and on his promotion to Captain in 1943 was transferred to the Petroleum Warfare Department to work on ‘PLUTO’ (Pipe-Line Underwater Transportation of Oil also known as Pipe Line Under The Ocean), the fuel pipeline to the Normandy, from Shanklin to Cherbourg. This is an official publication by H.M.S.O. for the Standard British Field Gun and Howitzer of WW2 and beyond. It was introduced into service just before the war started combining high angle and direct fire, relatively high rates of fire and a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece. It remained the British Army's primary field piece well into the 1960's. This copy of the handbook is a 1st edition of 1940 and has a multitude of ammendments dated 1941 and 1942. As it was an official publication and not for general release to the press or the public, copies are scarce and highly sought after. This is a clean, tight copy of a rare book. It is stamped as withdrawn stock from the Imperial War Museum Library. This is an official H.M.S.O. copy from 1917. The handbook covers all aspects of the Howitzer including the gun itself, the carriage, sightings, Limber and ammunition. It is fully illustrated throughout with drawings and exploded pull out diagrams and is a highly detailed original copy which is rare and desirable and from an impeccable source.
