**MINT BORE**Victorian British Volunteer/ Militia Officer’s Private Purchase Thomas Turner, Snider MK III .577 Obsolete Calibre 3 Band Rifle Retailed By T. Fletcher London. Sn 20861 - 20861
Thomas Turner, 1811-1886, was born in Marlborough (Wiltshire). He was a son of Thomas Turner, 1770- 1843, also a gunmaker and engraver. The family were previously saddlers and their history in Marlborough has been traced back to the 17th Century. In 1838 Thomas Turner established his own gunmaking business at 3 Middle Row, Reading. He was also a sword maker and engraver. His father continued as a gunmaker in Marlborough where he was succeeded by another son, Henry Arthur at 21 High Street until late in the 19th Century. In 1840 Thomas Turner married Emma Jane Jarvis (born Upavon 1812). Thomas Turner’s business prospered. Two sons, Thomas Henry (1852-1939) and Edward (1868-1939) followed their father into the business. Thomas and Thomas Henry’s Wills both describe them as Gun Manufacturers. Branches were opened in Newbury, Basingstoke and Hungerford. This is a militia / volunteer officer’s private purchase .577 Calibre Snider, MK III 3 Band Rifle by Thomas Turner. It has all original woodwork and metal throughout. The bottom of the shoulder stock remnants of an old label adhered. Its steel action plate is signed by the retailer T. Fletcher, 115 Church Road London’. The breech and barrel have proof / inspection marks. The top of the barrel is signed by the maker ‘T.Turner’. It has a brass butt plate, trigger guard & fore end block. The rifle measures 55” overall with a 36 ½” barrel. The barrel’s bore is near mint, clean and bright with well defined rifling. The hinged breech has the correct MK III knurled locking catch. The rifle is complete with single sling swivel, ram rod, block, block and blade fore sight, ladder rear sight & heavy military hammer. Its cocking and firing actions work crisply. The price includes UK delivery. This is a private purchase .577 Calibre Snider, MK III 3 Band Rifle retailed by Thomas Turner Birmingham. It has all original Walnut woodwork and metal throughout. Its steel action plate is signed by the retailer Thomas Turner, Fisher Street, Birmingham. The breech has a proof / inspection marks and partially visible Snider patent mark. It has a brass butt plate, trigger guard & fore end block. The rifle measures 55” overall with a 36 ½” barrel. The barrel’s bore is near mint, clean with crisp well defined rifling. The barrel is signed ‘T. Turner’ and the wood has Turner’s trademark roundel (all illustrated). The hinged breech has the correct MK III knurled locking catch. This is a quality private purchase .577 Calibre Snider, 3 Band Enfield Rifle retailed by John Horsley of York. The gun has all original walnut woodwork throughout and the steel action plate is signed by the retailer John Horsley of York. The rifle has a brass butt plate, trigger guard & fore end block. The rifle has the anti-snag Baddeley bands and the correct square section head cleaning rod adopted on later Snider rifles. The gun is complete with both sling swivels, cleaning rod, block and blade fore sight, 950 yard ramp and ladder rear sight & heavy military hammer. The breech and barrel have Birmingham proof / inspection marks for 25 bore which is .577 calibre. The breech and barrel also carry the snider logo, the breech block stamped on the top SNIDER PATENT. The rifle measures 55” overall with a 36 ½” barrel. The rifle retains much of its blued finish with a bore is near mint condition with crisp well defined rifling. **RARE**Austrian Lorenz Model 1854/66 14mm Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Lorenz Jagerstutzen (Sharpshooter’s) Carbine 1866 Converted To 11x58R Cartridge Werndl Breech Loading. Sn 20731 - 20731
The Austrian Lorenz rifle and carbines were used in the mid 19th century. They were used in the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859 and the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, and also featured prominently in the American Civil War. The Lorenz rifle was designed by Austrian lieutenant Joseph Lorenz. It was first approved for manufacture in 1854, and was Austria's first all-new infantry firearm since 1842. Replacing the earlier Augustin musket, the Lorenz was first distributed to Austrian soldiers in 1855. In 1866 some of the rifles and carbines were converted to Werndl breech loading weapons. Our Austrian Model 1854/66 Muzzle Loading Percussion Lorenz Jagerstutzen (Sharpshooter’s) Carbine Was Converted To Werndl Breech Loading in 1866 and is in excellent condition. It has all original metal work in the white and Beech stock with Figured cheek piece. The wood and metal work are excellent. The wood is impressed with inspection marks illustrated. It is fitted with clearing rod, sling swivels, graduated sliding bar rear sight, block and blade foresight, bayonet lug and steel butt plate. The heel of the butt plate has indistinct regiment marks. The barrel is stamped ‘LW 11129’ and the metal has other numbers and marks (illustrated). The carbine’s 24½” 2 stage barrel has well defined rifling and just light staining consistent with age and use. It measures 43 ½”overall. It's loading and firing actions work crisply. These Jagerstutzen carbines were designed to take a specific sword bayonet only designed for these weapons, The Lorenz Jager carbine Bayonet with Helical Slot (see page 13 item 19 and page 8 of The Bayonet book by Watts & White). This is an excellent Martini Action .297/230 Obsolete Calibre Cadet Rifle. Many of these rifles were sent to Australia for their military training. It is rare to find British examples without Australian marks. Our rare example without Australian Government marks is complete with sling Swivels, cleaning rod, block & blade foresight, adjustable graduated 50-100-200 yards ladder rear sight and steel butt plate. The steel barrel's bore is near mint clean & bright with typical light rifling and it has a crisp martini action which works crisply. It has all original wood furniture and metal work. The barrel is marked ‘The British Cadet Rifle’ & has calibre detail. The action is crisply stamped ‘A&N CSLtd London (Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Ltd)’ (Army & Navy Stores was a department store group in the United Kingdom, which originated as a co-operative society for military officers and their families during the nineteenth century. The society became a limited liability company in the 1930s and purchased a number of independent department stores during the 1950s and 1960s). This is an antique muzzle loading 12 Bore Single Barrel Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting Shotgun in Spanish form. It has a 28 ½” two stage browned steel un-sighted barrel and measures a short 44 ½” overall making it ideal for ladies or youth use. The barrel has German silver bands and roundel insert at the breech. The barrel's smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. The action tang, hammer and action plate have engraved with foliate decoration. The trigger guard has extended tang with Pineapple finial. The wrist of the stock has chequered panels. The top of the wrist is inlaid with void German silver escutcheon and it has a German silver fore end block. The stock is fitted with a steel butt plate with extended tang & under the barrel are steel ram rod mounts. The stock is all original with just light bumps and bruises to be expected. **RARE**MINT BORE**American Civil War Era Austrian Model 1854 .54 Obsolete Calibre Lorenz Rifled Musket (1861 Springfield) Converted To Breech Capping Loading Regiment Marked ’51.1/7’ & Leather Sling. Sn 16430a - 16430a
The Lorenz rifle was an Austrian rifle used in the mid 19th Century. It was used in several European wars, and also featured prominently in the U.S. Civil War. The Lorenz rifle was designed by Austrian Lieutenant Joseph Lorenz on similar design principles as the 1861 Springfield Armoury Rifled Musket. It was first approved for manufacture in 1854, and was Austria's first all-new infantry firearm in decades. The Lorenz rifle was the third most widely used rifle during the American Civil War. The Union recorded purchases of 226,924 and the Confederacy bought as many as 100,000. This original Lorenz rifle was converted in the period to breech capping loading. It has standard steel lock and furniture and undamaged walnut stock with figured check piece all in excellent condition. The metal work has even patina. The weapon has several small indistinct inspection marks and the steel butt plate tang is Regiment marked ’51.1/7’. It has sling swivels fitted with leather sling and original steel ram rod, It has a brass blade fore sight and flip up ladder rear sight. The bore of the musket’s 35” round steel barrel is near mint, clean & bright with crisp rifling. The rifle measures 53” overall length. The weapon’s loading, cocking and firing actions work crisply. It has all original walnut full stock with brass butt plate, fore end block, ram rod pipe and trigger guard with extended tang. It has a heavy military percussion hammer. The action plate is marked Crown VR (Victoria Regina), ‘Tower’ (Enfield) and ‘1845’ (date) together with inspection mark.
